HOLLYWOOD, CA — The horror movie Sinners has officially won the Oscar for "Crappiest Movie To Win An Oscar".
The award each year goes to the most awful, banal cinematic catastrophe that somehow squeaks out an Oscar for being extra gay or not having any white people in it.
"And the award goes to...Sinners!" announced host Conan O'Brien. "You actually won an Oscar for that appalling pile of trash, congratulations. Really, it's an amazing accomplishment to somehow score an Oscar for that monstrous affront to writing and acting, well done. Tip of the cap."
At publishing time, Sinners had also taken home the award for "Best Movie No One At The Academy Actually Watched Because Life Is Too Short."
Not even Wikipedia level research was done.
We had free tickets and I wanted my money back. It is one of those movies that you keep on going "surely it will get better". Nah.
Runner up? Lost in the men’s final?
Nah.
No bigger crime than the English Patient beating Fargo... I loved that Seinfeld episode - my lord, the English Patient was just so, so boring and Fargo is probably my favorite movie of all time.
I like Sinners fine. Maybe Marty Supreme.
I think it was a weak year.
I like horror movies - and that’s really what Sinners is. It’s a fun movie - and I’m glad Michael B Jordan won (though, Chalamet in the Dylan movie was amazing).
“Fargo is probably my favorite movie of all time.”
I’ve liked every Coen brothers movie I’ve ever watched except for one.
Their movies are one breath of fresh air in the stagnant hollywood movie industry.
I thought “F1” was a huge disappointment. I wanted it to be a lot better, but it really kind of stunk.
Indeed!
Technically, I suppose Big Lebowski is actually my “favorite”, but I guess I’d say Fargo is a “better” movie.
But yeah, those guys just make some really great films.
I was always a sucker for John Wayne westerns — and while it’s a somewhat different film? I think their rendition of True Grit is just *outstanding*. Jeff Bridges is an underrated treasure. One of the few actors where I’d give a movie I otherwise wouldn’t watch a chance.
“That rug really tied the room together, man.”
“That’s just like your opinion man”
The Dude abides...
I liked True Grit except for when he stabbed the horse and ran it to death.
I get he was supposed to saving the little girls life but the animal lover in me cringed at that scene.
Aside from that I really enjoyed the dialog.
Never seen a western where the characters interacted with each other like that.
If you haven’t seen The Ballard of Buster Scruggs give it a try..another western made up of short stories...not for everyone...different but I found it mostly entertaining.
The last ten years the Best Picture winners have all been pretty weak movies.
“Green Book” 2019
“Spotlight” 2016
were both pretty good movies. Not great
You really have to go back to:
“No Country for Old Men” 2008
“The Departed” 2007
“Lord of the Rings” 2004
“Gladiator” 2001
Then in the 90s there were a string of GREAT movies:
“Titanic” 1998
“Braveheart” 1996
“Forest Gump” 1995
“Schindlers List” 1994
“Unforgiven” 1993
“Silence of the Lambs” 1992
“Dances with Wolves” 1991
Where 7 out of 10 were EPIC movies.
Ha!
I’m normally not one who likes to costume-up for Halloween, but about 20 years ago - my wife and I dressed up as Walter Sobchak (me) and Jeff Lebowski (her) for a friend’s Halloween party. My personality is more Walter (and she’s more Dude) anyway, but we actually practiced and prepared. I’m normally clean-shaven, but I even grew out and trimmed facial hair to match Walter — I already had everything else. We even re-watched the movie and practiced some scenes. It took all my discipline not to break character and and explain how and why Walter was right about “prior restraint” in the diner scene.
We were a BIG hit at the party. One of the few times my wife admitted “OK, you were right” - worth it just for that. But she wanted to do some typical couples costume and I convinced her we should go as Walter and the Dude - fortunately, she likes the movie nearly as much as me, so after some arm-twisting, she agreed.
The only downside was that yes - for about a month afterwards, whenever we had arguments, she’d slip into “Well, that’s just your opinion, man...” and it would drive me nuts!
Yes, a highly embarrassing moment for Beatty.
AHHHHHHHH!! Out of IT in Africa was awful. A Room with a View was another non delight. Won five British Academy Film Awards and a Golden Globe.
It was obviously because it was an all vampire cast.
“I hahd a fahm in Ahf-rica.” Oscar, Please!
Raising Arizona is their best, by far.
Well, congratulations, they had alot of tough competition for crappiest movie.
No, you’re right. That part was just bait for the masses. The only non-racist was Remmick. Coogler definitely had an axe to grind.
Still, good plot, good dialogue, great music.
Definitely a bit over-hyped.
