CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett sat down with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday to discuss the war with Iran, potential American casualties, and what an Iranian surrender could look like. CBS aired an edited version of this full interview on TV on Sunday.
"We're very much on track, on plan," Hegseth said. "We're not flying a mission accomplished banner-- like George W. Bush on-- on an aircraft carrier. We're not doing that and we haven't done that. But we can be clear with the American people that this is not a fair fight."
"Our capabilities are overwhelming compared to what Iran's are. And frankly, when you combine our Air Force with the air force of the Israeli Defense Forces, it's the two most powerful air forces in the world. "
"The ability for us to be up over the top and hunting with more conventional munitions, gravity bombs, 500-pound, 1,000-pound, 2,000-pound bombs on military targets-- that-- we haven't even really begun to start that effort of the campaign, which is gonna showcase even more how-- how we will execute on those objectives," he said.
CBS's Major Garrett asked: "The president said recently there will be no deal with Iran except unconditional surrender. What does that look like, unconditional surrender? How will you know it's real?"
"It means we're fighting to win," Hegseth said. "It means we set the terms. We'll know when they're not capable of fighting. There'll be a point where they'll have no choice but to do that. Whe-- whether they know it or not, they will be combat-ineffective. They will surrender."
Asked about the possibility of "boots on the ground," Hegseth said: "Very fair question. People ask boots on the ground, no boots on the ground, four weeks, two weeks, six weeks

I hope the Iranian population is willing to do some of the hard work.
Going that far might really trigger WW III. The rest world would see as a modern-day Germany.
Meanwhile, we're headed for $5 gasoline and stagflation.
Early indications are the Kurds are willing to do some of the hard work. There are likely others.
“Meanwhile, we’re headed for $5 gasoline and stagflation.”
Mr. Hiroshima, pay 50% more at the pump or be vaporized.
Fill ‘er up!
“Early indications are the Kurds are willing to do some of the hard work.”
The Kurds aren’t likely to do much as they have been betrayed repeatedly.
California’s $5/gallon gas was self-inflicted by stupid “Green” policy and over-regulation of their refineries. Corporations are running as fast as they can from the insane business / regulatory climate created by California Dems, Newsom, and especially CARB.
We aren’t headed for $5/gallon gas in the sane part of the U.S.
Nostradamus ... is that you?
What might be done is to drop some Warsaw Pact weapons in university districts and bomb military bases that are nearby.
Freedom fighters can then gather up more weapons.
Gas will only go to $5 in states that purposely want that.
What I suggest is to have the US Navy impose a hard currency management system for Iranian oil exports.
Remember the Gulf War and our call for an uprising? All the uprisers, especially the Kurds, got slaughtered.
I didn’t see the interview.
But I would ask why give 60 Minutes ANY cred?
I saw an interview with Gerry Cardinale a major mover and shaker in the Paramount Skydance deal.
He was BRAGGING to the lefty that interviewed him that they were proud to have Chrissy Wallace onboard as they merged CNN and CBS News.
I was for Netflix getting CNN as it would have let CNN sink or swim in a free media marketplace.
And there is no reason to believe CNN can swim after decades of treading water by way of corporate life savers.
The problem is the Iranian government, not the Iranian society.
Finally, a rational voice!
The Shah is dead and these people’s parents cheered his departure. The experiment in adopting the ways of the West is over.
There will be no Mullahs in space suits, and the world does not need a rogue 7th-Century Middle Eastern country with nuclear weapons.
That person shows up in every single thread even remotely related to this subject, hoping to be Cassandra.
The only problem is, and the poster isn’t astute enough to understand that, is Cassandra was fated to utter the cry that nobody listened to, and to always be right.
The poster is fated to utter a warning cry and to always be always wrong.
Some people just want to occupy the high ground on failure so they can stake out that they were the only one smart enough to see it.
That poster is one of them.
That's a small price to pay to remove a mortal enemy to Isreal and the United States.
“So as far as we need? What does that mean? Dropping a nuclear missile...”
I think that you should embrace that concern down to your inner being and with all the stark terror that kind of stupidity brings. You deserve that fully due to the TDS you love to nourish.
That’s right.
Me too, but I don't think it's time to start just yet. I think we need for the Republican Guard (or whatever they're called) to desert their positions in droves so they don't just mow down those willing to do some of the hard work.
