DEAR ABBY: I am having a baby in five months. My doctor is recommending that anyone who visits the baby in the first three months be up to date on vaccines (Tdap, flu, COVID and RSV, if age 60-plus). We have decided to follow our doctor’s recommendations.
Some of my family members are resistant to getting these vaccines and want us to consider other options, like testing and wearing a mask, which is not as safe. Also, it would be hard for younger kids to do — my niece is 3. Abby, we vaccinated our young children (3 and 5) at the time when our niece was born, as part of what my sister requested.
I am already stressed about this situation and do not want to talk it to death with my family, and I have grown resentful because of it. In the past, I have set boundaries with my family, and most of them have not been understood or received well. Can you offer me some guidance? — EXPECTING IN WASHINGTON
DEAR EXPECTING: I am happy to try. When your baby arrives, the responsibility for its welfare will rest mostly on you, the mother. Follow your doctor’s medical advice to protect your child. If family members don’t want to respect your wishes and do what they must to avoid endangering your baby (as you did for them), realize you can’t change their minds, and keep your distance for the first three months.

She sounds like a nightmare when it comes to having things her way. She also sounds naive and easily led. Betcha she voted for Biden and Kamala.
Brain damage, aka ADHD incoming.
Amazing women can be tricked into crippling their children using 130 year old Faustian reasoning.
One of my kids is vaccinated (against my will) by his mother.
The other was not until 5 y.o. prior to Pre K.
One is home-bound, obsessive and failure-to-launch.
The other is straight-As, National Honors Society, taking college courses in high school, has multiple college scholarships and insists on getting a car at 17.
The reader can guess which is which.
F-All the vaxx shills insisting parents brain-damage their kids.
You can always spot the tyrant. They’re the ones who insist on telling other ppl what to do.
You never need to get legal involved. Short of a restraining order, they can’t keep you from speaking to your grandson. You can’t barge in their house but they can’t stop you from attending an event where the child is. At this point, they have taken away the one incentive to NOT do that. You have nothing to lose.
Judges see all this petty NC stuff by parents all the time. It’s a control issue and they know it.
It’s sad when Fear is exchanged for Reason.
Tdap is what they use for tetanus vaccine these days.
Is that pre or post the RFKjr recent reduction
Are we sure the baby is a baby? I mean, maybe the baby is identifying as Elon Musk, a dog or a space alien. We can't assume the baby identifies as a baby... 😀
This is historically incorrect. Many died young of several diseases before vaccinations were available. People has very large families in hopes that maybe a few would survive to adulthood. Check it out.
Of course, this increases the likelihood of severe reactions exponentially and it forces people to take all the vaccines, eliminates the choice of selection of which vaccine to be administered.
IMHO, health care in America et al. has gone to absolute $hit.
This used to be the country where everyone comes to get their health care (heart, cancer, etc). We had the most advanced tech, medications, procedures and a free market with consumers that were empowered.
Today this is not true, even though we still try to sell it as such.
I can go to Mexico as a cash paying customer and get the same care I can in the US, and that is not a joke or over exaggeration.
Our government and their attempts to limit litigation, act as an informal sales rep for big pharma (big pharma uses government to push or subsidize their stuff), control costs have created a horrible system of “high priced mediocrity.”
America literally has created the WORST of both worlds. How so?
You have a private store front, private insurance, doctors, big pharma, medical equipment manufacturers, hospitals. They all want to maximize profits.
But you have a government in the background defining what the “standard of care” looks like. The CDC/NIH, FDA, DEA (narcotics), and legislative/executive branch decide what this standard of care looks like.
America has socialized health care at the maximum cost the market will bear.
What this has also created is mass produced $hit care. Doctors and hospitals are controlled in what they can charge, Medicare/Medicaid, VA, CHIP, etc. The way you make money is by pumping patients through as absolutely fast as possible. Doctors do not have time to assess patients, to properly diagnose, or even treat them qualitatively. The entire focus is on quantity of care if you want to make a buck.
Today, the Average American still lives with the belief that they have a private health care system and choice, but they are in reality on a mass produced, socialized health care conveyor belt where they have absolutely no choice: doctors and hospitals will not side step the standard of care since this opens them up to legal action against them. The average American today gets the same sort of care you have in most of Europe's public health care (systems which we once mocked because of how backward they are), only we pay far more.
Letter delivery takes 4 years now?
Washing hands with soap and decontaminating drinking water are by far the leading reason survival rates for young children increased.
Just look at the Amish.
Neither sex has a lock on either sin or saintliness. But in the old days, women were arbitrarily considered more moral, and should lift men up. Today's young women are tired of all that, unfortunately.
I am the mother of a grown son and most of my female friends who have sons have watched with concern or in horror at what today's young women consider acceptable behavior towards their male schoolmates, boyfriends, collegues, husbands and/or children.
In a new and improved version, where just because they are leaders and protectors doesn't automatically mean they are a superior class of humans. Both sexes have their specialties, statistically speaking. And the U.S. Constitution has always made provision for individual rights, so that qualified people can cross the gender divide at work and should be regarded on merit, or lack thereof. DEI is evil.
The pendulum has swung way too far in the other direction imho.
We want youngsters to develop naturally strong immune systems when practical.
They have me completely blocked on everything web based as well as their phone. I had someone unexpectedly show me a pic of him and had no idea beforehand what he even looked like.
Bless his heart, but he looks like me. Ha ha...
The fairer sex needs to be deposed, AW.
Also—and not for nothing—if the members of the fairer sex are being honest, they know it.
They know that, as a group, they need to be deposed.
The matriarchy is dead. Long live the (restored?) patriarchy.

The family are the ones showing signs of ‘extreme sociopathy’ since they refuse to recognize and respect the rights of the mother and her rules.
Sociopathy, often associated with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), is a non-clinical term describing a pattern of disregard for social norms, rules, and the rights of others, typically characterized by lack of empathy, guilt, or remorse.
“lack of empathy, guilt, or remorse”
I guess we can debate who might be showing those attributes.
I think it is crazy mom.
Tdap is Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.
Pertussis is whooping cough which regularly kills or brain damages young infants. It is also a long illness lasting about 10 weeks unlike the common cold (7-10 days). It can take 2-3 months for the cough to fully resolve.
It is an illness you do not want to get or give.
RSV is also very hard on babies because their airways are so small the inflammatory response can suffucate them. My youngest spent a week in ICU at 6 months with it. They didn’t have a vaccine for it back then.
If my kids and/or their spouses ask me to get a Tdap or RSV vaccine for it, I’ll be getting it the next day. If they ask me to get a covid shot or flu shot, they can fly a kite.
