An avid New Jersey outdoor buff slipped off a trail and froze to death while hiking New York’s highest peak with her dog — after it took rescuers more than six hours to find her in bitter single-digit temperatures, officials said Wednesday.

Brianna Mohr, 21 — who posted breathtaking Instagram photos of herself on remote adventures — called 911 while clinging to the side of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks at 3 p.m. Thursday, according to police.

But rescuers couldn’t find Mohr, of Brick, until after 9 p.m., at which point she had died of hypothermia, New York State Police said.

Temperatures in Keene, New York, where the mountain is located, ranged from -8 to 20 degrees that day...

Sad, hopefully not to callus but one should really know their limits when exercising such activities.

I love hiking, but knowing when it isn’t a good idea to start or continue is critical for safety.

despite calling 911 for help

Yeah, uhhhh, I wouldn’t expect an ambulance to get there anytime soon.

The key to hiking Madmani’s highest peak in New Yawk is do it in the summer. Global warming will kill ya in the winter.

Many people has hobbies that require common sense, or bad things happen. Snow skiing in avalanche conditions, flying at night at low AGL or into IMC, and surfing with the sharks are a few.

Dopamine is a heck of a natural drug.

Keene vs the summit are two radically different places. The wind on These peaks can be insane. You can drive to the top of Whiteface nearby. I was there in August decades ago and it was snowing.

Of course that was during global cooling and nuclear winter…….

RIP

Hiking alone in single digit temperatures. Where do people get the idea this is a safe thing to do. Eight back country skiers dead in Tahoe after they ignored blizzard and Avalanche warnings. Good judgment seems to be a rare commodity these days.

Unfortunately a case of FAFO, risked her life most likely for the social media hits.

She should have known the temps before she set out - and if she did, would have saved the hike for another day. If she didn't check the temps, she was inexperienced and shouldn't have been hiking at all.

Yeah, my thoughts too. You’re on a mountain peak, lady! It’s not like EMS can just send an ambulance right out.

I’ve been watching these videos on You Tube of Mt. Everest hikers who think they know better than the sherpas and keep pushing themselves when common sense says “don’t try it”.

Did she get the “clicks” she was looking for when she pulled that stunt?

How foolish! She put rescuers lives at risk all for a few likes on social media. It’s not as if it wasn’t known that the temperature was deadly cold.

My rule was only to ride when the temperature started with a 5 and preferably with a 6.

A lot of people go unprepaired, under dressed, no emergency stuff like lighters AND matches, space blanket (for winter hikes, they dont take up any room, and can be great for a shelter where fire refl3cts off back at the person keeping it warm), and water (can carry food too, but be aware bears can be a problem. Two women 8n our area were followed by a bear because they had food in packpack- bear followed them zll the way back to their vehicle).

Always carried a backpack w8th eseentials when on long hikes. Hiked in all kinds of weather, 8n temps well below zero- hunted and fished 8n temps -25 for hours on end. Dtayin warm aint hard when you have fire. Had a tinder kit witn chwrred denim too- came in very helpful when wood was soaked.

There's such a simple solution if you are out in the wilderness by yourself. My wife bought one for me (though, at times, I think she'd rather I left it behind).

This would have saved her life. As would basic survival gear like a light tent, a small stove, a bit of food, and a space blanket. Heading out in those temps without such equipment is just nuts.
