Keene vs the summit are two radically different places. The wind on These peaks can be insane. You can drive to the top of Whiteface nearby. I was there in August decades ago and it was snowing.

Of course that was during global cooling and nuclear winter…….

A lot of people go unprepaired, under dressed, no emergency stuff like lighters AND matches, space blanket (for winter hikes, they dont take up any room, and can be great for a shelter where fire refl3cts off back at the person keeping it warm), and water (can carry food too, but be aware bears can be a problem. Two women 8n our area were followed by a bear because they had food in packpack- bear followed them zll the way back to their vehicle).

Always carried a backpack w8th eseentials when on long hikes. Hiked in all kinds of weather, 8n temps well below zero- hunted and fished 8n temps -25 for hours on end. Dtayin warm aint hard when you have fire. Had a tinder kit witn chwrred denim too- came in very helpful when wood was soaked.
