Strapped New Yorkers swarm chaotic Mamdani-inspired free grocery store pop-up: We’re 'in pain’

On Sunday in a busy stretch of restaurants and boutiques in the West Village, hundreds of New Yorkers queued up outside a pop-up shop offering free groceries.

"New Yorkers are in pain," Nick from Queens, New York, one of several people Fox News Digital interviewed outside the pop-up, said as he waited to grab pasta sauce, bath soap and a bag of Tide Pods.

The scene was underscored by the city's cost of living woes and anxiety over who would get a yellow ticket granting entry to the small shop before they "sold out" of goods.

As the crowd grew, however, so did the tension.  People in line told Fox News Digital Sunday that they were worried they’d made the trip for nothing. "I literally got here at 9 o’clock… and basically what they said is that they ran out of tickets," a woman named Fatima told Fox News Digital.  Another man, Sherrod from Jamaica, Queens, said the same happened to him.

"They told me that they ran out of tickets," he said. "I couldn’t get no more food.… I couldn’t get access to the store."

As the crowd grew, however, so did the tension.

People in line told Fox News Digital Sunday that they were worried they’d made the trip for nothing.

"I literally got here at 9 o’clock… and basically what they said is that they ran out of tickets," a woman named Fatima told Fox News Digital.

Fatima and Sherrod spoke after security guards began pushing people off the block shortly after 9 a.m., when the first batch of tickets was gone. Several shoppers said they were told to leave the area and come back around 1:30 p.m. for another chance — and not to linger on the sidewalk as ticket-holders moved through the store.

Free stuff until it runs out.

Security guards? Sounds like a private militia. Where are the vaunted NYPD?

That the commies put it in a trendy area is the chef’s kiss.

This story is no different than years of communist rule in all the communist countries that went all in. Most people will never learn.

This was literally predicted to happen the moment Mamdani announced his intention to run. None of them will accept the truth because it is too hard to admit they were wrong or they are to invested in being taken care of by someone or something else.

Truely NPCs

Taxpayer funded “free stuff” distributed by demonic politicians and their enablers.

Some friends serve at a local mission connected facility that gives free clothing to the homeless.

They started having similar problems with people treating it like it was Walmart and they were shopping.

The fix was to bag up the clothing by size and gender and they got what they got.

This operation might do well to adopt a similar model. Not only would it calm the anxiety, it would also streamline the process.

NYC spends about $38,000/year/kid on K-12 public education.

NYC puts invaders up in expensive hotel rooms.

My wife had a co-worker who came from Russia about 25 years ago. She was still amazed that she could go into a grocery store and buy anything she wanted.

What did communists heat their house with before they got wood stoves?????

Electricity.

Mamdani said that, if the governor doesn’t let him raise the income tax on the wealthy, he will be “forced” to raise property taxes which will ultimately fall on the middle class.

What?

He promised everything would be free.

I was in a conversation with an international group of students once.

One of the women who had done work in Africa gushed about how generous African children were . . . you'd give one a piece of candy and they'd carefully divide it to share with their friends.

I remarked that Japanese children were like that shortly after World War II ended and then they embraced a free market economy where every kid's parents could afford to give them their own piece of candy and yet they still shared and traded.

Welcome to the Soviet Union, folks! It is new toilet paper lines, comrade!

TBF, prices in NYC are quite expensive. In the 00s, I took a number of trips to the New Years get-togethers up there. One year (2003?), I was prowling some of the corridors at Grand Central Station beforehand and saw a nice store with a deli counter. The stuff was quite expensive, but nowadays, those prices are probably what I’m paying at Food Lion in Maryland. Heaven only knows what urban New Yorkers are paying now.

Geez. most of these turds probably have ebt cards. Just pathetic. They voted for the bread line party and that is what they will get. They aren’t ever going to get gourmet groceries for free either.

These pop ups aren’t even Mamdani’s free grocery stores. They were like a temp food bank.

It might be better to charge $1(93 cents plus tax)/garment.

I see a lot of discarded clothing.

This may be in the article but I ain’t reading all that.

Is New York’s free grocery store still open?

No, New York City’s free grocery store, operated by Polymarket, is not open. The pop-up store, located in the West Village at 137 7th Avenue S, closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, after a five-day run.
