North Carolina Vet Tech Dason Garner Charged, Fired After Rescuing Abandoned Dog During Snowstorm
New York Post ^ | Feb. 5, 2026 | Nicholas McEntyre

A North Carolina veterinary technician has been charged and fired from her job after she rescued a dog that was abandoned in the cold winter weather — but failed to hand the pooch over to animal control.

Dason Garner has been left “completely broken” as she faces charges for keeping a stray animal, failure to surrender and interfering with law enforcement over her deed, according to WRAL.

Garner says she was punished for her act of compassion in rescuing the pooch from the brutal conditions after a harsh snowstorm barreled across Wilson, NC, over the weekend.

Is this really what our police & courts need to deal with. Poor lady. Poor dog!

I don’t understand the story. Animal shelters are often overloaded with animals, and it seems most would have gladly allowed a vet tech to foster one...

I’ve never heard of a law that prevents you from keeping a stray dog. That is the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

From my understanding, she was ordered several times to turn the dog over to the custody of Animal Control, but since she thought the dog would not be adopted, and would be put to sleep, she ignored the orders, assuming her compassion over-rided Animal Control’s authority. She bet wrong. Guilty!

Look at the pic of the unkempt, dirty dog with gummy Rasta Dreds sitting next to the Lady’s little Boy.
Why would you place your child right next to a dog who has been wandering for days, and could have several species of ticks, mites and fleas ready to sprinkle all over the interior of her car?

Is that fake news?
The points made in the story hit too many hot topics.

Doing good and being punished.(Like antiICE protesters.)

Helping the helpless(free immigration.Come and be pampered)

Cruel law enforcement (Like the current U.S. government enforcing the laws)

Being left anxious, brokenhearted, defeated( like hopeful illegal immigrants being sent home)

Reuniting the owner and the dog( like ICE should do with separated families)

Getting fired( like the disgusting violent verbal nurses on the net wishing harm to MAGA folk)

The story reeks of propaganda from a leftist hijacked news industry. A very inexpensive Hallmark movie with the requisite tear jerking sensibilities.

This is just wrong. She should not have even contacted animal control and in similar circumstance, others should leave the stupid government out of it.

If you read the whole article, she reunited the dog with it’s actual owner. The person who abandoned it was not it’s owner. Either she stole it, or she found it.

I think you are reading way too much into it. If anything, it’s anti-left: punishing someone for a meaningless rule, because the power of authority.

Your last paragraph got me thinking that it is an engineered story. What vet tech wouldn’t know that a stray mangy dog has lots of problems and should be quarantined (like in the trunk with food and water) till brought to shelter at home?
Sit the dog next to an infant? Nah.

I just don’t know why a shelter, especially during severe weather, would not allow a vet tech to foster it while the owner was sought.

Right on! Getting government involved, whose rules are set by self righteous liberals, is the height of stupidity. These animal welfare groups preen themselves that being dead is better for an animal than being cared for by an independent thinking person. Never let such a group know when you’ve saved an animal or bird. It will almost always end badly for the animal and possibly for you.

And THEN they sent it back to the woman who abandoned it! Anyone learn what she did with it after that?

The dog would have been just fine after a shave down and some good food. The woman who tried to save it had grooming experience. The care of that dog would have been trivial for her if she’d just kept her mouth shut.

Never call the law if you can handle the situation. The people in the animal area of the government are mostly nuts.

I didn’t read it that way. I understood that the dog was reunited with its owner, after being missing for a long time.

You could be correct...but there are toooo many little lessons. The old adage that no good deed goes unpunished is true, but was it odd to you that someone who abandoned a dog gets united back and admits that it is her dog? Most abandoned dogs are left in parks, parking lots, big public spaces.

I rescued one myself. Abandoned in a big parking lot outside a pet store and vet clinic. The vet clinic got the owner by the chip placed in the dog.
