Orlando International Airport was forced to ground all flights on Sunday afternoon after “extreme cold” sparked an emergency in the air traffic tower.
The FAA issued an alert about the ground stop due to a “possible fire” at an air traffic control tower early Sunday afternoon, but the order was lifted at 4:15 p.m. after the cause was determined.
In reality, the extreme cold — currently 43 degrees — caused a spinkler head in the fire suppression system at the facility to activate.
The agency had sent out a bare-bones “fire alarm/safety” advisory that a tower was evacuating due to a possible fire, with the probability of the ground stop being extended cited as “medium.”
According to FlightAware, 213 flight delays were reported into or out of Florida’s busiest airport on Sunday.
Sunday saw cold records smashed over the Sunshine State, with Daytona Beach, Leesburg, Sanford, Orlando, Melbourne, Vero Beach and Fort Pierce all notching their coldest low temperatures ever notched in the month of February.

January was REALLY mild up here on the Panhandle. I hit 56 miles on the trails in January! A new January record. A couple days were in the high 20s, but mostly low- to mid-30s.
“...in 30’ of snow.”
And that is why some planes have skis.
Ha
We didn’t have all these cancellations and delays until the DemonRATS came up with DEI.
Should help push back the pythons and other tropical invasives.
Poor babies. Montanans will send a prayer.
What an idiot.
Isn’t Montana a bit short on snow and cold this year?
i was hanging out on South beach in January in my shorts and tee-shirt thinking i was in paradise while the locals i was talking to were freezing their butt’s off.

“currently 43”
Here in PA that’s bikini weather. It hasn’t topped twenty degrees in about a week! :(
We had some 60 degree days in December, which is definitely not normal.
It’s supposed to be 52 here today.
I live in Maryland where it’s been 10-20 degrees all week. They’re panicking. (We grew up in Michigan and don’t care)
But, I’m in Orlando right now for a work trip. It’s sunny and low 40’s. People are bundled up for the Shackleton Expedition.
Yeah 40’s would be great. It was 23 degrees.
Yes. But still a lot less than 43 degrees
I was in boot camp in Orlando back in 68. It got down in the 30s and all we had were these little utility jackets to wear. Yes, it gets cold in Florida.
