The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
I squished a wasp in the shop today & had a bunch of flies on the bathroom window. It doesn’t take much for the bugs to reappear!
We’ll be high 50’s low 60’s until Sunday which is predicted to be around 38 with rain/snow in the forecast. We’ll be 30’s until later in the next week when temps start climbing again back towards 50’s. Yo yo weather but better than days/weeks of relentless Arctic cold.
My boxwoods have reappeared out of the snow/ice covering them & they look good. Two of my 4 Lenten Roses are partially visible - they are in a shady spot & melting is slow. Snow is supposed to be insulating so the bushes/plants were probably protected from the frigid temps. My herb garden really took a hit so I’ll have to replant some of it.
China has several thousand people employed on Weather Modification projects that might be messing our weather up and sending all the bad stuff to California and New England (Unintentionally of course!) Not sure if that is good or not, but its February 17 and here is is 62F and windy, no rain, no snow.
Goodness! (Just for fun here!) Give Beau some buckets and maple taps!!
Box elder trees can be tapped for maple syrup and they grow all over the midwest, Missouri, and Southern Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana! (Trap the bugs and feed them to your chickens!!) :O (I think you know this, but others may not!!)
https://heatherearles.com/making-syrup-from-boxelder/
SNIP.........Legge starts tapping his boxelder trees about the second week in March as freezing temperatures are needed at night and warm temperatures are needed during the day to help the flowing or pumping process of the sap. Then once the buds start to come out, it’s time to leave the tree be.
When drilling into a boxelder tree, use a 5/16 bit and drill 1 1/2 inches deep and about 2 1/2 to 3 feet from the base’s bottom. If you drill into the same tree the previous year, move your tap over 6 inches and continue the same method each year following. Tap into the tree until it bounces. This means you have a good seal. The tap stays in day and night.
Once your tap is in, you need some kind of line where your syrup can go. If you plan on tapping over 50 trees, you may want to set up a system where the taps are connected and flow into one large tank or container. However, if you are tapping less than 50, Legge’s method works ...(see link for entire article!)
If you grow some sorghum in the summer you can use the Maple Syrup cooking pan to reduce your Sorghum Squeezings too!
I have an OH Kringle in the freezer that I have been saving and I suppose I will need thaw it out now and have it with coffee! (Amazingly, sold by Trader Joes about 2 miles from where I live!)
I sent the link to my Sister in Racine, who will appreciate that it is PBS and about her neighborhood! (She is less than a mile from their store on Route 20, not a temptation I would want!)
I-94, the Chicago Milwaukee corridor. I grew up north of Chicago, on the edge of town and looking west in my back yard it was all farm fields. Then they ploughed through the fields and put I 94 and a toll gate about a 1/2 mile away. I would go to sleep at night listening to the cars and trucks leaving the toll booth shifting up through their gears heading north. The farm house and out buildings I grew up in are gone, and so is the countryside. The last time I passed, I couldn't even find one of the fields I used to play in.
The Edge of Town where I lived. It was 30 miles north of downtown Chicago, not in Cook County.
Swiss Chard has an advantage of possible overwintering.
Ash Wednesday already .... the past year flew by so fast I can hardly believe we are ‘here’ again so fast. Easter is early this year - April 5. I noticed the daffodils are up about 2” so we should have some Easter flowers.
I’m up early, waiting for dawn at 6:55. I try to see both sunrise & sunset because it’s supposed to help with your Circadian rhythm. I’m ‘good’ on sunrise, usually wake up just before. Sunset is still too early for bedtime, but I do have a hard time staying awake in the evening. It takes a while past sunrise for the sun to make it over the mountains & we often have gorgeous clouds in shades of pinks & purples before the sun finally appears.
Big day today - car is in the shop so will it pass inspection without needing something (like brake work). Brakes seem to be fine, not hearing any noises, but you never know. Tires should be ok still.
Next is getting those shelves out of the basement. Also today: our basement entry is from the garage & mom has all the Christmas decorations packed up & taking up most of the garage - I need to get those in the basement & the tree as well (still in the foyer). The steps down into the basement are steep and narrow - we need a handrail, just haven’t gone to the trouble to have one installed. There is a gate at the top of the steps & it will interfere with a handrail so figuring out a workable solution has been the impediment to getting the rail.
After sleeping on the new ‘arrangement’ of the one wall in the shop (moving Army table, etc.), I’m excited because I can see progress! My list of things ‘to do’ is getting longer however ... definitely need a load of mulch because with all of the frost heave around my raised beds, it’s a muddy mess. I’d like to get straw bales stored in the barn for the garden this year, but it will likely be April before I can even think of planting anything. I did buy some cheapie plant/row markers at the Dollar Store yesterday so this year, I don’t have to use rocks! :-)
Up earlier than usual (4:45 today). My list is growing of chores and having an live in helper for a while longer is fantastic. Wishing you and all my Garden Peeps a fruitful Lent. Out church will be crowded. Two Masses with ashes and a prayer service with ashes at noon. We always have many Christians come for ashes.
For the invisible garden.
Amen!
I’ll have to give it a try.
Looks like we’re in for a great sap run. The weather is perfect for it for the next 10 days at least.
I have a small space heater in the shop bathroom to keep the pipes from freezing. The previous owner left the heater. I don’t like it - it has a ‘thermostat’ knob, but I really don’t know when it cuts on/off - no readings on the knob.
Anyway, the shop & barn are on a separate meter & when I got the electric bill, it was twice what it usually is. Of course, we had that Arctic freeze, but still ..... So I was looking for a small heater with a thermostat that had numbers so I could set when the heat comes on. What I found instead was a controller that you plug into the wall set with the temperature range you want & the heater plugs into the controller. It’s cheaper than a new heater & I can set the temp low (like 45) which will keep the pipes from freezing but the electric bill should be less. These type of controllers are good for greenhouses if you want to keep it at a certain temperature above freezing.

High of 75 and not much wind. The bugs will be coming out today I’m sure including ticks and a bunch of things that fly.
Weird thing to say in February; I better get out there before it gets too hot; because 75 really will feel hot right now.
Tractor will be sitting on it’s new front tires here shortly. Then there’s the radiator leak, uggh.
I know the bolts holding the radiator support to the frame will break. Already attempted to take it apart once and had one break and got one part way out but stopped because it was going to break. Two were already broken when I got the tractor. Battery sits right above them and acid corroded the steel. The tilt front end/hood is rigged and will also have bolts break, what few exist. I’ll probably have to do some fabrication to make that right. Old battery tray metal corroded away and someone screwed some sheet metal in place of it. Battery cables and other wiring up front need attention too.
The brass tanks of the radiator slide down two steel channels that are the radiator support. I imagine there has to be something between them. Tar paper or something thin. Hopefully separating them won’t cause or expose large holes in the radiator.
Been putting this off because I’m scared of taking it apart. There’s no such thing as buying a new radiator and they do get brittle with age. I would have to have one custom made out of aluminum which would be $700 or so and I’d have to redesign and fabricate a new radiator support to accept it. Radiator support, battery tray and tilt front end all bolt together and make up a single assembly.
I might just cut a hole in the protective screen for the radiator and try to solder the two small holes in place.
You can blame Europe and their GDPR compliance. The same Europe that wants to censor the web was once worried about people’s privacy and came up with rules that all websites visited by Europeanors have to follow and that included being able to opt out of some cookies. It seems they can’t or won’t allow a cookie to be set that keeps your cookie preferences so you end up having to choose your preferences on every visit.
I always just hit necessary only on stackexchange. That and close the stupid google sign in popup in the upper right.
I'm going all-in on Lavender this season. I may plant an entire BED of the stuff! Planning ahead for Christmas. Jellies, soap, shortbread cookies, infused sugar, infused honey, etc.

Yes, he’s tapped them - but we have plenty of REAL Maple trees, and the bugs use the Box Elders for something - probably BREEDING into the Zillions - so they can leave.
With no snow cover and now this crazy warm up, he and his ‘Sugar Mentor’ are not predicting a good sap season here by us. :(
I knew you’d love that Kringle piece! I would LOVE to go to that Cheese Castle, myself. And that outlet mall looked amazing...and I’m not even a big Mall Rat, LOL!
We go to Milwaukee twice a year to shop at our beloved Mayfair Mall*, (with VERY OBVIOUS Security Officers all over the place - it hasn’t been taken over by the criminals - yet!) so maybe I can talk the girls into heading a bit more SOUTH one of these times. ;)
*When I was a kid, they used to flood a section of the parking lot at Mayfair and make it into an ice skating rink. Grandma and I used to skate there. Good memories!
Electricity to the greenhouse is still on my Wish List...even though Beau IS an Electrician! Grrrr!
You know how it goes...Cobbler’s kids have no shoes, Electricians ‘Wife’ has no electricity where she wants it, LOL!
However it might be a fun possibility for people who live in the "Box Elder Belt"!
It became more than Europe. I read that

I am looking into it for my non-commercial cite.
However, my cookie images was in response to this from Qiviut (I neglected to include it):
We had a nice surprise earlier this week ... notice from the mail carrier that there was a package, but no safe place to leave it - driveway situation kept her from getting to the house. When mom picked it up at the PO, it was a box of homemade cookies from our neighbor at the lake. He’s sent us some baked goods before - super nice guy & keeps an eye on the cabin for us. The cookies are GONE already :-)
