A "Star Trek" actress says conservative backlash is pushing the franchise to lean harder into what she calls its "super woke" identity. Among the critics is White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who has accused the franchise of abandoning its core audience.
Gina Yashere, who plays Lura Thok in the new Paramount+ series "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," responded online after sharing a clip from comedian Bill Maher’s show that touched on the controversy.
"All of the hatred coming at us is from fragile, angry White men, talking about either our non-whiteness or our bodies," Yashere wrote Sunday in an Instagram post.

The Arnaz family (which launched Star Trek, originally belonged to Desilu) would not be happy to see what it has become.
Yellowstone and Star Trek belong to the same firm. Yellowstone is MTV Studios, Star Trek is Desilu.
My point is that SHE didn't do that. He did through his own failings and the Illinois Republicans did by not having a viable alternative.
My wife and I lasted 15 minutes into the first episode before turning it off. We won’t be watching further. Absolute trash.

During Hollywood’s early years that was the basic MO. Get a story, cast it as best you can, roll film and churn them out. The only ones I see sticking to that today is Hallmark. I used to love surfing into a hallmark and sticking around a bit to mock the preciousness of the characters and the story and somewhere along the line I noticed that however mockable they were for other reasons they never pissed me off with what I’d come to call “Director bloat”. They did what they had to do to narrate the story and there was no “I’m the Director and I’m an artist too and by God I’m gonna prove it by directing the hell out of this thing”! Directing the hell out of a movie involves endless camera positioning and movement, edits, digital bs and on and on. Just because a talented Director here or there, think Citizen Kane, JAWS, had certain narration problems and overcame them with clever, NECESSARY direction others think they have to overload a project with endless clever crap most of which simply makes you aware of your ass in the seat.
You seem very determined to blame her for a political outcome when she had no political motive. In doing so you completely excuse her husband who was a scumbag personally. Was there nobody else to run in that whole state? Seriously? The Republican Party can come up with no other good Republican to run for a US Senate seat?
Maybe hubby shouldn’t have pissed his wife off knowing he had all those skeletons in the closet.

I’m all in favor of direct participation.
But I still do enjoy an occasional movie. I have zero aptitude for the performing arts myself. Yes, I could read a book, but there’s something to be said for “show, don’t tell” and letting visual imagery, sound and the other arts and crafts involved in movies work their magic. Nonverbal communication is powerful, or can be when it’s well done.
But I’d rather see a movie in a theater, which facilitates full immersion, than be a couch potato viewer surrounded by continuous distractions. Many of the best movies are those that rely on careful world building and character development, and those require a slow build. The necessary attention span is hard to sustain at home.
The streamers are now telling their writers to pick up the pace, dumb down the dialogue and plot, and plan climatic moments within the first few minutes and then at regular intervals. All this is because they are now making movies for multitasking home viewers who aren’t paying attention. It’s a qualitative downward spiral. Good, traditional movies are still made today, but the structural bias of streaming platforms is stacked against them to the point that the good films can be hard to find, simply because the streamers don’t promote them.
That’s why older movies are so much better than so much of what is produced today. (Of course, we also bias that comparison by going to the GOAT lists for older movies.) Theatrical exhibition imposes different parameters and expands options because the audience is committed for the duration.
And by the way, in the six or seven years since I had my Road to Damascus moment, realized that I had a huge blind spot, and reengaged with movies, I have not once seen any disruptive behavior in a theater — not even people on their phones. That’s because I don’t go to the idiot bait movies.
I’m not a snob. Viewing preferences vary. Our tastes change, and I don’t watch what I watched 40 years ago. And I’m glad the flying spandex movies still draw in hordes of young people, because they keep the theaters alive. I’m content to be down at the other end of the hallway with the other adults, everyone zeroed in on a movie we are highly self-selected to see.

He was a conservative, a friend of Ronald Reagan, and was a religious Jew with a Catholic mother. He had a very hard time growing up as his mother was mentally ill and unstable, and his father died when Landon was 23, leaving him to have to care for his mother and his many children. He was married three times, and had children in each relationship, either adopted or biological.
He packed a lot of family-friendly aspirational film roles, fatherhood and martyred sonship into his short life—his mother lived on until Michael's mid-40s, and he died at age 54. No wonder he drank and smoked, which was much more socially acceptable at the time. Otherwise, to what degeneration do you refer?
The difference is that now it's all crap. William Shatner was entertaining.
This is her only chance at “fame” and a good paycheck. And as a lowlife, she’ll say or do anything to try to protect those things.
I thought he was all over the tabloids for being a hard-drinking womanizer/cheater (complete opposite of the image of the characters he portrayed) before he got cancer and unfortunately passed away at a fairly young age.
