Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has been trying for years now to get more regulations around name, image and likeness (NIL) deals in college sports, saying back in 2023 that the landscape was "in peril."
….
The post pointed out that the Iowa State Cyclones, who just lost longtime head coach Matt Campbell to the vacant Penn State Nittany Lions job, only has 17 players remaining on their roster for next season. Among those players, only one was a starter.

Why stop there? Why not pay high school players? How about j-high? Little Leaguers? Aren’t those kids worth anything??? (/s, if it’s not obvious)
Why isn’t a scholarship that covers the cost of a college education considered sufficient payment for athletes anymore?
Good luck to the coaches who have to game plan around players who may show up or who may enter the portal at the drop of a hat. It’s a new roster every year unless you are in a school that can pay the biggest of bucks. Only the schools that can pay their players the most will stand a chance of winning conference championships, never mind a natty. The playing field is definitely not level.
Do collegiate athletes still have to take classes at the colleges they are playing for and earn passing grades?
They now allow drafted players to play in college if they are foreigners. Drafted but hasn’t played a game but they won’t allow American high school players the same right. That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I disagree with Cruz on this. The senate should focus on real issues that impact American families.
NIL, transfer portal, networks, etc., are ruining the game. I say let the system collapse.
What good has sports really done for us lately? So many young kids are focused on sports instead of academics. They put no effort into education. The best athletes are allowed to coast through school but then are unprepared when it comes to academics. They get easily accepted into colleges because of sports. It actually weighs down everyone else.
Cruz needs to focus on issues that affect working families.
“Why isn’t a scholarship that covers the cost of a college education considered sufficient payment for athletes anymore?”
Because the market has determined that elite college athletes have a value that exceeds the cost of a scholarship.
NCAA brought this upon itself by treating the players like chattel to be used to maximize $$$.

No one ever required any of them to play sports. They had the opportunity to get a real job.
“I say let the system collapse.”

There you go. Navy-Army-Air Force...athletes with honor.
Very doubtful. What would the point be?
I agree. College sports football is no longer college sports, from the fan and student perspective.
Is de facto free agency the same for college basketball?
The love of money has replaced the love for the game. These youngsters have no idea what they are doing.
Perverse? Corrupt???
Do you try and get the best deal you can for your services and talents??? Or do you just take what is given to you??
Why shouldn’t college football players who bring in tens of millions each year to their respective programs have that same opportunity to get the best deal for themselves????
Young men who bring in tens of millions of $$$$ in revenue annually to their respective schools at that....
“The love of money has replaced the love for the game.”
If that is the case, you should walk into your boss’s office and say, “I work the the love of my job, I don’t want to take your money!”
How is it perverse or corrupt for an individual to make money on their own name, image and likeness?
I would think a system that prevented an individual from making money on their own name, image and likeness, while at the same time profiting billions from that individual’s efforts, is perverse.
The vast majority of them should worry about getting an education while they have the most time and opportunity. Very few are going to make much money from football.
Leave it alone, Ted. There are bigger problems in this country than college sports. Let them sort it out after it all collapses.
Who gives a flying fig? There are bigger fish to fry! GAWD!, this is why I hate Canadians!
I find it rather telling that “Getting an education” is not even mentioned in passing.
