Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has been trying for years now to get more regulations around name, image and likeness (NIL) deals in college sports, saying back in 2023 that the landscape was "in peril."
….
The post pointed out that the Iowa State Cyclones, who just lost longtime head coach Matt Campbell to the vacant Penn State Nittany Lions job, only has 17 players remaining on their roster for next season. Among those players, only one was a starter.

NIL was created in the Courts and then codified by the state leigslatures starting in California. Judges and politicians are why we can’t have anything nice.
Why? Because you find it sick that young men can make money?
The whole NIL/transfer portal duo is a nightmare for college athletics, but Pandora’s box will not be closing anytime soon, unfortunately.
Next thing, Cruz will show interest in New Hampshire college sports?
“That flies entirely in the face of the concept of *student* athletics.”
Your concept of student athletics died along with sock-hops and poodle skirts.
“The people who just want the players to go back to being strict amateurs...”
They have an option - NCAA Division III is non-scholarship.
If that isn’t good enough, oh, well...
Exactly. The NCAA and the universities had the chance to provide the players with a modest, basic monthly stipend over 20 years ago, but fought tooth and nail to even do that. Greedy bastards. Now they’re reaping the whirlwind.
Other than Texas Tech, all of FBS college football sucks. Just paid mercenaries to get suburban kids to spend daddy’s dough there.
What do you find objectionable about young men developing a skillset and being paid what their value is in the marketplace?
I thought that was called a scholarship.
A freeper who gets it…I really would think that Freerepublic would have people who believe in freedom. Quitting schools and transferring to another is an act of freedom.
Correct!
Sounds like you like it when young men have no money.
He needs to reread the constitution.
Go Navy - United States Naval Academy.
I agree. I admit to being very ignorant of the details, but seems like there should be some additional requirements to stay at a school for 2 years or lose eligibility on transfer for at least several games, if not a season. The way it is now, seems like it is too easy for players, even mediocre ones, to change schools every year, which ends up often not being to the benefit of the players nor the new schools. IMHO
We stopped watching pro ball (NFL, MLB) due to the fact that your favorite team was always trading away players/”free agents” and we could not really root for a semi-stable roster of players over time. That lead us to be season ticket holders for our local state college baseball team...now the “NIL” and “transfer portal” have messed up college sports and made it “Pro” (paid) too. Sad state of affairs.

I agree.
The whole NIL situation would never had happened if the NCAA had simply settled the lawsuit by allowing colleges to pay student athletes a living expense stipend.
