Unleash the hounds! And terriers and lapdogs. The American Kennel Club adds 3 breeds (PETA is Mad!)

They're ready to embark on 2026.

Three more dog breeds joined the American Kennel Club's roster of recognized breeds on Tuesday, making them eligible for many U.S. dog shows and likely increasing their visibility to the pet-loving public.

One of the newcomers is a terrier named for a U.S. president. Another is a toy dog from Cold War-era Russia. The third is a centuries-old French hunting hound. Here's a closer look: The basset fauve de Bretagne

The stats: 12.5 to 15.5 inches (32 to 40 centimeters) at the base of the neck; 23 to 39 pounds (10.5 to 17.5 kilograms)

The topline: A hardy, sociable, compact hound that can hunt all day — and needs mental and physical activity.

The pronunciation: bah-SAY’ fove deh breh-TAHN’-yeh

The translation: Fawn-colored, low-set dog from Brittany

The history: Versions of these coarse-coated, tan-hued hounds go back at least as far as 16th-century French aristocratic circles. The breed has been championed in the U.S. in recent years by Cindy Hartman, a South Carolina service dog trainer who brought a pair of fauve puppies back from France in 2001. She has since trained and placed about 20 fauves as medical alert dogs for people with diabetes, she said.

The quote: “They’re wicked smart, and so if you’re wanting a dog that’s just going to lay around all day long, a fauve is not for you,” Hartman said. “But yet, when challenged mentally and physically, they’re happy to come in with you and curl up on the sofa for the evening.”

About a year ago my wife and I lost our minds and got a new born Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. One year of puppy chaos behind us I can tell you how they get so called Lap Dogs. They breed for cute and anxious. The more anxiety, the better.

Many people develop breeds for the love of the science and the animals.

I’ve even known people who bred fancy rats:

All are super cute.

I always wonder about genetic abnormalities from inbreeding whenever I see these pure bred dogs.

My daughter lost a dog last year that was 1/2 standard poodle - apparently kidney dysplasia is not uncommon in that breed, meaning that the kidneys do not develop. There was nothing to be done except to put the poor puppy down, she was only seven months old, it was devastating.

I have a shih-tzu/poodle and was wondering why the vet wanted to run a full kidney panel on my puppy, I’d never had a vet do that before with all my previous dogs - found out later that the shih-tzu is also known for kidney dysplasia.

The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is a good-looking dog. Small, but muscular.

"All these new breeds? WHY? MONEY."

Well, they're not really 'new' breeds - they've been around for many, many years. It takes a long time and a lot of glad-handing and campaigning and $ to become an AKC recognized breed.

These three are only 'new' breeds in terms of the AKC.

We're members of the United Kennel Club. We breed Treeing Walker Coonhounds and Plott Hounds for hunting both raccoon and black bear...for little to NO profit. ;)

We’ve had kidney issues with a few Plott hounds that we got from another breeder - who turned out to be breeding his dogs too closely. I truly HATE that guy. I wish him ill.

We stopped buying from him and ventured out with our own blood lines for both breeds with fabulous results. :)

No, just UKC examples of both breeds. I raised the last batch (6!) of Treeing Walker Coonhounds last spring/summer. We kept two and sold four to hunting families that we know.

Ridge and 'Daisy.' He saved up his money doing farm chores for Grandpa all winter/spring/summer and paid CASH for his very first hunting dog.

Every person who supports peta, every member of peta, every person who every donated to peta should be rounded up and treated the same way they treat strays and peoples pets who they steel.

It’s very pretty.

I would like a dog when the current crop of cats is done; and I like a lot of the working dogs. But those dogs need to work, and at my age I wouldn’t have an outlet to provide that.

(I’ve always admired the greyhounds, and knew a couple of people who adopted former racing dogs when dog racing was still a thing. They’re happy if you let them sleep almost all day :-)
