The Novel Sir Nigel | 1905 | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Yesterday, down in Southern NC, I stood next to a magnificent animal. The owner's daughter took him out for a spin. I've never seen anything like it.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

In his novel Sir Nigel, Conan Doyle described him thusly:
Fetlock deep in the lush grass there stood a magnificent horse as a sculptor or soldier might thrill to see. His color was a light chestnut, with mane and tail of a more tawny tint. Seventeen hands high, with a barrel and haunches which bespoke tremendous strength, he fined down to the most delicate lines of dainty breed in neck and crest and shoulder. He was indeed a glorious sight as he stood there, his beautiful body leaning back from his wide-spread and propped fore legs, his head craned high, his ears erect, his mane bristling, his red nostrils opening and shutting with wrath, and his flashing eyes turning from side to side in haughty menace and defiance.

Atypical novel by ACD, outside of his SH series. ACD liked these novels more than the ACD stories himself. They are mostly forgotten or less well known than they once were.

The book took me a long time to read, because Doyle's vocabulary greatly exceeded mine. The rule in my house was if I didn't know a word in a book, I had to look it up in the dictionary. Doyle was not shy when it came to showing-off his vocabulary. Another one that I liked was The White Company.

I loved the many versions. Each was a little different.

Sad case of the loss of his son caused him to become obsessed with contacting the dead, seances, mediums, spirit photography and automatic writing. Son Kingsley died in WWI.

Harry Houdini was an advocate of debunking the fakery of mediums and the occult charlatans and he ran into hostility from Doyle as he tried to convince him but then they ended up becoming friends.
