Atypical novel by ACD, outside of his SH series. ACD liked these novels more than the ACD stories himself. They are mostly forgotten or less well known than they once were.

The book took me a long time to read, because Doyle's vocabulary greatly exceeded mine. The rule in my house was if I didn't know a word in a book, I had to look it up in the dictionary. Doyle was not shy when it came to showing-off his vocabulary. Another one that I liked was The White Company.
