In Slovenia, the ancient Pust festival happens each year before Easter to mark the end of winter.
Locals wear masks and costumes to chase away winter and celebrate the coming of spring.
Images of the festival captured by photographer Ciril Jazbec offer a glimpse into a ritual that has great significance for the community. The Little-Known Ancient Festival to Chase Away Winter | 3:10

I've spent a couple of days moving from the old workhorse laptop (started W8, then 8.1, then 10.x0 to the new W11 laptop.
I bet they’ve been dressing up like that since before Otzi.
I’m pretty much loaded up for the airing of grievances. 😁
If you’re Otzi and you see these masked strangers carrying on, your first reaction would be to run up into the Alps.
Looks like fun; but I bet those costumes take a lot of work.
Don’t know about the festivals but there are many stories on who started fir trees for Christmas celebrations. Most agree the ancient pagans thought the trees symbolized hope for getting past the winter to the rebirth of nature in spring.
Supposedly Martin Luther brought a tree inside and linked it to Christian celebrations.
From Michigan State University site....
In early church calendars, Dec. 24 was Adam and Eve’s day. The paradise tree represented the Garden of Eden.
Two cities argue about the first documented use of a tree at Christmas and New Year celebrations, Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia. Both claim they had the first trees; Tallinn in 1441 and Riga in 1510
I’m not sure if there can be a definite answer, one can hardly see the mythology for all the trees, such as Yggdrasil:

No need. The left, the media (but I repeat myself) and tech illiterate media (most of ‘em) have already assured us that climate change (used to be glow-bull warming) has - or soon will- eliminate winter.
Interesting mythology.
One difference today:
“The Well of Urd, according to him, is not below Yggdrasil, as it is in Völuspá – it’s actually in the sky...”
Today:
The Well of Turd flows outward from MS Now and CNN.
Otzi chose poorly.
He should have taken that left turn at Alpuquerque.
Hmmmm...it ain’t workin...
Isn’t that called Spring Break now?
Pust a move.
They wait until March, very wussy move. 🃏 There was some kind of road emergency near here, and I wanted to get in the car just to rubbernick, but it’s below 10 F and, well, nuts to that. It went on for an hour or so, very unusual, must have been serious.
Now I know why Horslips recorded this as an instrumental.
