Bambas candidly told Weidenhofer about how the bills piled up when his wife was really sick. He said he lost his pension and healthcare coverage.
The elderly Army veteran said he had to sell the house to make it through the tough times. His wife passed away 7 years ago and he visits her grave every day.
Bambas said he works 5 days a week, 8 hours a day – a full time job – at 88 to make ends meet.

I saw the video of this gentleman. 88 years old, and working retail to make ends meet.
He worked for GM but they “stole” his pension.
His sick - now deceased wife’s medical bills took whatever was left.
THIS is a great story. And THIS is America.
He’s now my best uncle.
That’s just beautiful.
This is an interesting good news story.
I can relate to why this guy visits his wife’s grave everyday. It’s a simple case of true and everlasting love. Something the younger generations have no idea what that even is.
Back off, bub. Lol
OBAMA STOLE MILLIONS FROM GM WORKERS
Not to mention the stock and bond holders.
Trump should give it all back to the plaintiffs.
Pronto.
I saw an interview of another man whose wife became disabled and eventually died. He had to quit his job to care for her and they lived off her disability check.
When she died he had to pay medical bills and rent, but couldn’t afford both.
Now he lives in a tent.
The story in the post and the one I mentioned represent one reason why some people in other countries don’t want the American system, especially the American medical system.
Prayers for this man. I hope he can live comfortably now.
And, if he does not qualify, then he would qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Medicaid, and Food Stamps, and Old Age rental assistance.
Sorry - someone needs to explain this in detail.
Thanks.
I met another person who retired from General Motors. He was still working when he was 84 because he had a pension from GM and lost everything.
Years ago there were defined benefit retirement plans. If you worked for a company for x number of years you were ‘guaranteed” a certain amount of money - as long as the company was solvent. A lot of people who worked for GM lost their benefits.
I have the same reaction. It is a “feel-good” story and happy for the 88 year old vet but am sure there thousands—if not millions—of elderly Americans out there who have been dealt a poorer hand in the game of life. At 85 myself, I know being able to work as an octogenarian is probably more of a blessing than misfortune given the availability of social security and veteran’s benefits for which the old vet may qualify. This is story less about righting some wrongs than it is artificial benevolence.
