A Brazilian Harvard Law School professor who pleaded guilty last month to illegally firing an air rifle outside a Boston-area synagogue — and told police he was “hunting rats” — has agreed to leave the US following his arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement this week.
Carlos Portugal Gouvea, 43, copped Nov. 13 to a single charge of illegal use of the air rifle in connection with the Oct. 2 incident outside of Brookline’s Temple Beth Zion, which took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism.
The scholar was arrested by ICE Boston Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Wednesday and agreed to return to Brazil voluntarily to avoid deportation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
“It is a privilege to work and study in the United States, not a right,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “There is no room in the United States for brazen, violent acts of anti-Semitism like this. They are an affront to our core principals [sic] as a country and an unacceptable threat against law-abiding American citizens.”

“agreed to return to Brazil voluntarily to avoid deportation”
Which means at some point he’ll be back......also, does he get to collect his $1,000 parting gift?
Harvard.
Proof that a chrome appearance is often only plastic.
‘Which means at some point he’ll be back......also, does he get to collect his $1,000 parting gift?’
I don’t think he deserves so much as a nickel.
Me either....
But I’d bet he collects.
A little-known NYC law protects rats from human predation.
If you killed all the rats, who’d be left to run the city?
I wonder why is it illegal to fire an air rifle ?
Adios Pancho!
Although I approve of shooting rats…I still believe that Democrats are people too and should not be shot at!
This is Massachusetts ... to those idiots, an air rifle is no different from a firearm. Other northeast democRAT run hellholes have similar rules. New Jersey comes to mind.
My only comment on the “antisemitism” thing is that I am tired of hearing the word ... along with “racism”, “sexism”, “homophobia”, “transphobia”, “islamophobia”, and a host of other leftist trash terms.
Because it's Boston.
In Massachusetts it’s illegal to fire airguns in public places.
State-Level Regulation
Massachusetts state law (M.G.L. Chapter 269, Section 12B) explicitly prohibits discharging a BB shot, pellet, or other object from an air rifle (or BB gun) into, from, or across any street, alley, public way, or railroad/railway right-of-way. This applies statewide, including Brookline. Additionally, minors under 18 face restrictions on possession and discharge unless accompanied by an adult or holding specific permits (e.g., a sporting/hunting license plus a police chief's permit). Violations carry a fine of up to $100 and potential confiscation of the air rifle. The primary reason for this prohibition is public safety: to prevent projectiles from endangering pedestrians, vehicles, or infrastructure on or near public thoroughfares, where accidental or errant shots could cause injury or property damage.
Local Regulations in Brookline
Brookline's General By-Laws (Article 6.6.1) ban discharging any "gun, fowling-piece, or firearm" within 200 feet of any street or on private grounds without the owner's consent. While "firearm" is typically defined under state law (M.G.L. Chapter 140, Section 121) as excluding air rifles, Brookline's Park Rules and Regulations explicitly prohibit possession or discharge of any "explosive, weapon, firearm, air gun, or firework" in all public parks, playgrounds, school grounds, and open spaces. This broad language covers air rifles town-wide in public areas.Combined with the state law, discharging an air rifle anywhere in Brookline is effectively illegal if it involves or risks public ways (which cover most of the densely populated town). Even on private property, the 200-foot street buffer and consent requirements make it impractical in a suburban setting like Brookline, where lots are small and streets are ubiquitous.
The underlying reasons mirror the state's: protecting dense residential and pedestrian areas from noise, ricochets, and hazards in a town with limited open space (Brookline spans just 6.75 square miles and has no designated public shooting ranges). These rules predate recent firearms debates and focus on preventing misuse rather than outright bans on ownership. For context, air rifles are not classified as "firearms" for licensing in MA, so adults can own them freely—but using them is heavily restricted.
If I used a pellet gun to hunt “rats” at a Mosque in Brazil, I doubt my punishment would be a free ride back to the US.
Compartmentalizing the rules.
Bigotry fatigue.
Why can’t I just be left alone to be a bigot.
I hate these people.
