Capturing the cultural zeitgeist and trends for the year ahead is a tricky business. But every year, the Pantone Color Institute chooses a color to do precisely that. And it has settled on a shade of white, “Cloud Dancer,” as its Color of the Year for 2026.
The institute, which is considered a leading authority on color, forecasting trends and advising brands, described the shade as “a billowy, balanced white imbued with a feeling of serenity.”
As technology’s grip on daily life tightens, Cloud Dancer represents a “calming influence in a frenetic society, rediscovering the value of measured consideration and quiet reflection,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the institute, told CNN.
The color is “associated with new beginnings” and “signifies our desire for a fresh start,” Eiseman said.
For the institute’s team of experts, everything is filtered through the lens of color. So every year since 1999, the program has sought to “highlight how what is taking place in our macro-culture at a moment in time is expressed through the language of color,” Laurie Pressman, the institute’s vice-president, told CNN.
To choose a color of the year, they sift through current cultural, political and style references, settle on a color family and then focus on the precise shade — paying close attention to its name, too.
“The color name is critical. The minute you hear a name describing color, you instantly conjure up an image,” Pressman said.
This precise shade of white, with its “equal balance of cool and warm undertones,” was carefully chosen, she added.
“Had we gone for a white that was more optically bright, not only does it take away from the natural feeling and honesty and authenticity that we’re looking for … it almost speaks to sterility and isolationism, because it’s cold,” she said.

Every new house I’ve been in since I moved to Texas has grey walls.
I definitely did not pick the CB400F because I was lusting after one on the Mecum Las Vegas motorcycle auction site.
Nope.
This CB400F is old-school, but sporty. And red, like 2026 is gonna be. Plus, the “waterfall” exhaust is classy, like Melania.
I definitely did not pick the CB400F because I was lusting after one on the Mecum Las Vegas motorcycle auction site.
Nope.
I left my job as a color name consultant and became a buffalo hunter. It’s been tough, I’m thinking about learning to code.
White is not a hard sell in the new houses around me.
Cloud Dancer is a neutral pale grey white. Years ago, I had a custom color made that was very like it. I used it on all my ceilings. It looked better than bright white. I also used it on trim in one room with pale blue walls. Very soothing but bright and light relefecting.
It makes sense for a new house or an aprtment to have white, but, usually the new resident wants to add color.
But people do get carried along on trends sometimes.
House Lust, for sure!

The first home I ever bought was a cute little Cape Cod. 800 whopping square feet, but it was on a corner lot and had a fenced yard for the dog. Only a ONE car attached garage.

“Very soothing but bright and light relefecting.”
Lighting makes ALL the difference. Before I sold my last house, I gave ‘The Old Girl’ a total re-vamp.
I used a color in the Living Room and up the staircase to the bedrooms called ‘Lion’ from Behr paints.
At times is was green, at times it was gold!
Both my Realtor and my Feng Shui friend who stages homes for a living said it was a great color.
The house sold within days. :)
“The house sold within days. :)”
And on the flip side, using bad colors costs people big bucks! My son bought a house like that. We walked in and you were hit in the face by a big bright blue wall that backdropped the open floor plan. It was a hot market and lots of houses were going way above asking. I told him to offer their price but no more.
He got it. The first thing we did was paint the wall and room a pale sage green. It was a full spectrum paint that changed color as the day went on. It tied everything together.
I had recently done our farmhouse and sold it the day it went on the market. Color and light matters!
And means that for the past 8 plus years
We have Bern living in a sea of gray!
BM Linen white has always been my go to
I recently painted an apartment a brighter white and it shows very well. I painted the cabinets a nice green and got comments even from People who were not looking.
Absolutely love them both!
The last house we had I hated so much I named it The Slough Of Despond. In the realtor’s office, Hubby yelled, “THIS IS THE HOUSE WERE GETTING!” So it’s the house we got.
“Color and light matters!”
Exactly!
At one point I bought my Family Home from my folks. The last time it had been updated was in the 70’s, so lots of orange, yellow, white and avocado green. And SHAG carpeting - EVERYWHERE! One LARGE kitchen wall was covered in shiny vinyl wallpaper in a floral in all of those colors.
*SHUDDER*
VERY COOL at the time, but...this was 30 year later, Mom!
I STILL dream about that house! And it always has that wallpaper and it is always a disaster, and the kitchen sink is always full of dirty dishes to wash!*
*Consult your local Psychiatrist to figure out what all of THAT means, LOL!
Four years later I was done with that house. I installed new carpenting in the hallways and bedrooms, hardwood floors in the kitchen and living room were sanded and polished, all of the (really wonderful!) cabinetry had been stained and polished, I painted the outside a lovely ‘Colonial Blue’ versus the ‘Puke Green’ it had been, etc.
Made $30K profit on that house and again, sold it within days.
STILL kicking myself for not listing it for more, but I was also buying my little farm then and I WANTED that farm! ;)
What shade of green?
