It’s the graffiti that makes it worse.

worth repeating:
THE 45 COMMUNIST GOALS AS READ INTO THE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, 1963
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

Sometimes the graffiti is actually an improvement.
At least graffiti has color.
Now the bills that they post all over everything make it look like the building has leprosy.

Easy. the Internet allows people to find like-minded people and connect with them. This leads to group think and people becoming less and less tolerant of other ideas, no matter how much they preach tolerance.
Also, the Internet allows people to say nasty things to others anonymously that would get them punched in the mouth if they said it to your face.

This would have been mid-90s. 15 or so years later call it.
We still talk about how brain dead it was. It was literally like 250’ or less door-door.

Why is government art downtown typically large and grotesqu? Is it purposefully dehumanizing?

IMHO it's selective bias on what old buildings lasted. There were probably tons of Renaissance era buildings that were cheaply made and not designed to be so ornate -- we just didn't preserve those. The nice ones were preserved.
For example hundreds of years from now if someone is trying to assess how nice buildings were made in the past couple of centuries: no one will know about the modest two-story house I live in in north central Alabama because it won't be preserved. But the Arlington House, a Birmingham, Al area 1840s mansion will probably continue to be preserved and remembered and may make people think that our era was nothing but grandiose homes.

Good point. The puritanical strain has always been anti-art, anti-beauty for the sake of beauty.

When we stopped using natural materials like wood and stone for buildings.
All this plastic and glass is very cold and uninviting and doesn’t age well.

The modern art movement has done NOTHING to give beauty to life.
Seems like all those guys did was see how far they could push obscenity under the guise of art.

Then don't read her threads. Simple. I don't. This was not "her thread". Just where she decided to whine.
Speak for yourself. Don't presume to speak for others.
Ok, you cuddle her. Might want to get some shots first. But your choice.
Because uniformity of thought is of the utmost importance and greatest value.
Because unhappy whinny bi*ches are dangerous.
They should be encouraged to remove themselves to someplace where they will be happier. If such place exists.

So do boats.
You can even walk.

I always remember how in the "Great Leap Forward" one of the things the CCP did was make it a crime to have a goldfish.
Because it was something that was just beautiful for it's own sake and great Mao knows we could not have something like that around.
When you look at architecture in America before the 1930s you see a great deal of beauty for it's own sake.
Even after you see people, even poor people, encouraged to make things nice for themselves. From making flour sacks in pretty prints because they knew the poor used them to make clothing to colorful designs on linoleum and full color illustrations suitable for putting up in your house in magazines there were bits of beauty widely available to people who did not have much money.
That started ending in the 1960s when the Anti-Beauty people took control.
