An incredible NUCLEAR-POWERED FLIGHT film. We scanned this declassified film showing 30 minutes of detail from the major reactor development program at its peak, between 1956-1958.

Whoops—- “Manned Aircraft Progress Report”— stupid spellcheck. geeez
“this is a secret film containing restricted data”
(cough, cough)
Imagine the fallout (pun intended) of a nuclear powered aircraft crashing into a housing ediition in Maryland or somewhere. I think that might have shelved the project. They put a hanger area in Idaho for it though.
Couldn’t make it work for planes. Succeeded with submarines . Would be ideal for spacecraft.
I was going to ask if the aircraft banded together for mutual support.
Yes I think that nuclear proportion is logical for the next generation of spacecraft. The only problem would be getting the radioactive materials out in the space so that you could load them into the craft. The reason being, that all of the liberals and environmentalists would cry and wine that there could be an accident before getting into orbit. That’s what I love about watching these old formally top-secret videos. The men back then just went full steam ahead and they just just had a job to do.
Yeah, it turns out heavy reactors and lightweight aircraft aren’t a good mix. They envisioned planes in the air for months at a time.
the liberals would “whine.”. Wow, spellcheck is so helpful when you’re driving.
Its comical when I read about “the enormous technical challenge” posed by building small modular nuclear reactors, when the Navy has been doing it for 70 years.
yep, and there are 10-11 million illegals and we can’t go back to the moon even though the apollo lunar module was literally wrapped in tinfoil
