Saturday was snowiest November day in Chicago ever, forecasters say (only 5.18 years left)

If that snowstorm felt unusual for this time of the year, it was.

Saturday was the snowiest November day ever recorded in Chicago, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm dumped over 8 inches of snow on parts of the city. O’Hare International Airport got 8.4 inches as of Sunday morning, and Midway had 6 inches, forecasters said.

But the storm isn’t over yet.

The area’s winter weather advisory was extended from 6 a.m. to noon Sunday.

“A band of snowfall is moving across Chicago, bringing a quick coating of snow again,” Weather Service meteorologist Zachary Yak said. “We will be done with this storm system around noon.”

Saturday was the snowiest November day since Nov. 6, 1951, which saw 8 inches, Yak said. The 8.4-inch count also broke the daily snowfall record for Nov. 29. The previous record was set in 1942 with 3 inches of snow.

Travelers both on the road and in the air were impacted by the storm.

Nearly 500 car crashes happened on Chicago-area expressways from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Illinois State Police.

State troopers responded to 480 crashes, and 66 of them caused injuries. Troopers also helped about 300 motorists who called for assistance on the road, according to state police.

First question to always ask. How far back do the records go?

At one time chiraq was under a sheet of ice around 1-2 miles thick.

November, frewemble. Anyone remember January 1967?

The Blizzard of 1967 (January 26-27, 1967)

Record Snowfall: The storm dumped a record-setting 23.0 inches (58 cm) of snow on Chicago over 29 hours.

Conditions: Just two days prior, the temperature had reached an unseasonably warm 65°F (18°C). The blizzard was accompanied by high winds, with gusts up to 53 mph at Midway Airport, creating snow drifts of 4 to 6 feet, and even up to 15 feet in some areas.

City Paralysis: The city was brought to a standstill. Approximately 20,000 to 50,000 cars and over 1,000 CTA buses were abandoned on streets and expressways, including Lake Shore Drive. O’Hare and Midway Airports were closed for days.

Impact: The blizzard resulted in 60 deaths across the Chicago area (many from heart attacks while shoveling snow), and caused an estimated $150 million in damages (over $1 billion in today’s dollars). Helicopters were used to deliver medical supplies to hospitals.

Cleanup: It took the city of Chicago up to three weeks to clear all the streets, a process that included dumping snow into the Chicago River.

******

Grandma said she was stuck without food by the snow, so husband and I went out in that in our little MGB, driving tilted in the snow ruts. Kept getting stuck and being pulled out by wonderful people. Made it the 40 blocks to grandma to find she’d been taken care of by the neighbors. One more memory to keep, even after the snow finally melted.

It’s also because of the timing of the snow

It just happen to all fall on the same calendar day

If the same storm started sooner or later it would be split into 2 days and no “snowiest day” on Record in Nov

I see you are a realist about Chicago.

Probably familiar with this, but worth putting on the thread.

People forget about that extreme amount of moisture the Hunga-Tonga volcano placed into the atmosphere. We have about 4 more years until it dissipates!!

I shoveled 8 inches of climate change off 3 driveways this morning.

Mrs L made a huge breakfast with a mimosa. Then a nice nap. We will be in the hot tub later. After that I’ll see what I can talk her into.

Haven’t checked that out in a while but just did and the numbers are looking good so far. Record lows and not it’s not temperatures.

The deep mysteries of global warming are far too abstruse for a mere mortal such as myself. When it get colder, I always think of cooling. Not warming. Naive, I know.
