Kristin Chenoweth's new Broadway show will close months earlier than expected amid slow ticket sales, shocking reviews and the star's comments about slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk - leading some to speculate her support for Kirk's family got the play cancelled.
The Queen of Versailles, which just opened on November 9, will hold its final performance on January 4 after previously having dates listed through March 29.
Chenoweth, best known for playing Glinda in the original stage production of Wicked, was the target of intense criticism in September after Kirk's assassination for showing sympathy to his family in a social media post.
'I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree, but appreciated some perspectives,' the 57-year-old wrote on Instagram.
'What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.'
The comments by Chenoweth, who has a large LGBT following, sparked outrage from fans who inundated her with critical comments.
The Broadway icon told the The Hollywood Reporter this month that the backlash 'almost broke' her.
'It was tough on me, but I'm not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it,' she said of the Kirk controversy.
Chenoweth's role in the play, which is based on a 2012 documentary about a Florida couple seeking to build a luxurious abode just before the 2008 financial crisis, had been in the works for five years.
'I dare say I just think it's a very topical piece,' she told the Hollywood Reporter.
'People will have things to say about it, whether they're good or bad.'
The show began previews on October 8 following a successful stint at the Emerson Colonial Theater in Boston.

Get woke, go broke.
My parents were very active in the Boston theater scene. I grew up with a lot of Broadway show tunes in the house. I watched movies of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. I really like that stuff.
But some how in the past 50 or 60 years (at least) musical theater has become explicitly homosexual. I don’t think normal people have much interest in it anymore. It’s got an unseemly, sleazy feel now in my opinion. To be a star and to express any sort of Normal opinion has got to be the kiss of death.
Exactly
The reviews were awful. But, blaming the right is easier than admitting a dog of a show.
It’s the opposite of “go woke, go broke.” She expressed sympathy for the Kirks and the speculation is the intolerant Alphabet People shunned her play.
She gave supportive comment for Kirk family. Opposite of woke.
Truly evil people.
Seriously?
its new York, if you ain't, gay, lesbian, anti ice, anti trump, and butt hurt because " racism". You keep your mouth shut.
ain't a whole lot of conservatives in NYC these days.
NYC canceled her, not woke.
That’s what the headline and article said. Some comments posted here don’t make any sense in that context.
Two seemingly opposite things could both be true at the same time
1) it was a bad play.
2) for all its acclaimed “free-thinking” and self-righteousness, NY City is very dense and uniform ideological thought bubble, comparable to what we have seen in places like the Soviet Union or 3rd world dictatorships.
I have seen previews for the newest version of Wicked with Ariane Grande and Madame Nosering.
It was very well produced and visually striking, but I was kind of surprised at the steady stream of the Lesbian innuendo and hintings throughout that short preview.
Giving the Male lead a subdued, secondary role, the Evil Witch sort of becoming the man, instead. The lyrics in the songs. Seen in other eras as well. It’s making money, though.
Couldn’t possibly be because the play sucked?
Yes
She didn’t get woke and still went broke.
Kristin Chenoweth endorsed Hillary Clinton for President in 2016, and even sang in an endorsement video for the Democrat National Convention in 2016.
Now she has the Left turn on her.

Could have been poor ticket sales and the fact that NOT every “broadway” show is an instant hit no matter how many gays and trannies are in the cast. The leading ladies comments could just have been coincidental icing on the cake for nervous inventors.
Maybe Bialystok & Bloom should have produced this instead.
I vowed never to watch Wicked (which is how Kristen Chenoweth got her fame) because the bits my friends would sing would drive me nuts ...Somehow got peddled into seeing the movie in theaters though...And that's been breaking Blockbuster records with the sequel due on Thanksgiving.
It was watchable as a film, but still no my thing... Chenoweth actually made a cameo in the first one.
