Rampaging grizzly bear attacks schoolchildren and teacher on Canada hike leaving at least 11 injured with two in critical condition

A grizzly bear attacked a group of elementary school students and teachers in Canada, leaving 11 people injured.

Two people were left critically injured, and two sustained serious injuries following the attack at Acwsalcta School on Thursday in Bella Coola, northwest of Vancouver.

Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites said in a statement that two ambulances and a helicopter were called to the scene.

'Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to four patients and transported them to hospital. Two patients were in critical condition and two were in serious condition,' he said.

Police corporal Madonna Saunderson said she did not yet know the age or gender of the injured students, but described the victims' injuries as 'very serious at the very least.'

Veronica Schooner said her 10-year-old son Alvarez was in the Year 4-5 class that was attacked while on a walk and was so close to the animal 'he even felt its fur.'

'He was running for his life,' she told local media.

Ms Schooner said several people attempted to halt the attack but one male teacher 'got the whole brunt of it' and was among the people taken by helicopter from the scene.

She added that Alvarez was left 'traumatized' by the attack on his friends, and three children were among those with major injuries, although Emergency Health Services have not officially confirmed the ages of any of the victims.

'He said that bear ran so close to him, but it was going after somebody else,' said Ms Schooner.

She said that when she picked up Alvarez, he was 'in shock,' and his shoes were covered in mud from his ordeal.

“He said that bear ran so close to him, but it was going after somebody else,’”

…1st rule when being chased by a bear. Outrun the other guy.

I hope they find that bear and turn him into a rug, of course. And, that every one affected heals up ok.

But, for those crazy for ladies who say, “I’d prefer the bear,” here’s a story.

Grizzly bears are misunderstood! Someone must have triggered it. All you need to do in Griz country is say “bear bear” and camp out with Timothy Treadwell!

If the male teacher got in the way of the bear to stop it from attacking children (he wasn't going to halt it), knowing that he would be mauled and probably killed, he's a hero.

This is why there is going to be a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sanctioned bear hunt in my state.

Just like deer, the population of some species must be controlled.

And yet, there are people protesting it in Tallahassee.

Those people need to get a life.

What would Brian Boitano do?

When Brian Boitano was in the Alps
Fighting grizzly bears
He used his magical fire breath
And saved the maidens fair!

If only some adult on the hike had a firearm to protect those children from that Grizzly. It seems like we are hearing about many more violent bear attacks all over, kind f like two years of covid gave them the opportunity to expand their territory and los fear of humans.

So our guide on an Alaska ATV tour a year and a half ago had a very nice chest rig with a .44 Mag stainless revolver with a 6” or 8” barrel and a set of reloads.

Probably not allowed on a school trip in Canuckistan.

The Canadians would look down on an American teacher who ended the problem with a gun. They’re too European for that.

Observations often lead to questions.

Who takes an elementary class hiking in Bella Coola, Canada?

Good old safe-from-guns Canada.

There SHOULD be a LOT more hunting of predators like bears and alligators(and other animals); we should not be constantly fearing attacks on humans and domestic animals nor be overrun by deer, rabbits, mice, hawks,or socialists.

Some friends & I visited Whistler in September. Lots of bears were coming near to town because of all the fires up there recently. Two grizzlies had been spotted & one was hanging out near a school. No one seemed worried about it. I guess they will when it decides to have a kid for lunch.

Fighting a bear without a weapon is very difficult, but a fair amount of people manage to survive. Some even manage to have most of the faculties intact after a considerable recovery.

Any weapon, even a pocket knife, a club, or a rock seems to increase the chance of winning the fight.

Firearms work the best, handguns seem to work better than rifles or shotguns, mostly because they can be quicker to get into action, and easier to hang on to while being mauled.

The sound of a firearm would scare the children, don’t you know?

No mention of whether the bear was a Mama Bear, or whether the group thought they were not in bear country, or if group had open food. It is late in hibernation season ...maybe bear wanted one last snack.
Either way...ya gotta’ have adequate protection when in the backwoods, from animal and human predators. Ain’t Country Bear Jamboree out there.
