Ukraine told to accept cash-for-land deal with Putin

Russia would keep control of Donbas region in exchange for rental fee under US plan

Ukraine could be forced to lease part of its territory to Russia under a US plan to end the war.

The Trump administration deal would see Kyiv cede control of the eastern Donbas region, but maintain legal ownership. Russia would pay an undisclosed rental fee for de facto control of the region, officials familiar with the deal told The Telegraph.

The 28-point plan was thrashed out between the US and Russia in a recent flurry of secretive talks, renewing fears that Ukraine is being frozen out of discussions about its future.

As well as forcing Ukraine to surrender territory, the deal would slash the size of Kyiv’s military in half and ban it from possessing long-range missiles.

It would also block deployments of foreign troops in Ukraine, end US military assistance and prevent foreign diplomatic aircraft from landing in the country. Russian would be made an official state language, and the Russian Orthodox Church would be given official status in the occupied territories.

Ukraine would be permitted to negotiate security guarantees from the US and European governments to help maintain any ceasefire.

Officials in the Ukrainian capital dismissed the plan, and Russia denied knowledge of it. Donald Trump did not comment on the deal, but revealed on Wednesday that he had recently told Vladimir Putin: “Let me settle your freaking war”.

However, sources said the White House had told Volodymyr Zelensky he must agree to the terms, sensing weakness because of a corruption scandal engulfing the Ukrainian president.

Mr Zelensky has repeatedly ruled out surrendering the entire Donbas to Russia as the price for peace. Ceding territory has been a long-held demand of Putin since he met Mr Trump in Alaska in August for peace...

Russia says this deal is news to them, they were not consulted, and have made no new positions or agreements since the meeting with trump in Alaska. Ukraine said no already

The idiots in DC think everything is a real estate deal.

A war for territory IS a real estate deal.

Why should Russia lease something they can own?

I call fake news.

Assuming this has and relation to reality, it’s basically Munich II and will produce the same results.

Trump proposed a real estate “lease” deal long long ago…a million lives ago. To resolve the social and ethnic partition of Eastern Ukraine from Kiev

Remember the Russians were long term “ leasing” Sevastopol from Ukraine…its Black Sea base which has been Russian for hundreds of years and was never Ukrainian) when the Ukes started playing footsie with NATO wanting to build a base there…triggering among other things, the Russian seizure of Crimea

This one kinda is.

Russia has taken by force and is occupying a substantial portion of Ukraine. Reports are they are advancing slowly little bit every day.

It is fantasy to think they will just pack up and leave.

Since Ukraine has neither the population, natural resources, manufacturing base nor GDP to remove them, and no world power is willing to do it, common sense says the negotiation is what will it take for Russia to stop advancing and maybe give some back.

The Russian advance is picking up the pace in southern Ukraine the past 2 weeks

Also if you zoom out you can see the left and right pincers forming for what’s left of the Donbas

Russia says they know nothing of this plan. This matters.

Ukraine says no. This does not matter.

And it only took a few months less than the “great patriotic war”
Almost, nearly, soon have taken a relatively small town

Meanwhile russia went for food exporter to food importer
Gasoline exporter to gas importer
Budget surplus to massive new debt
2nd largest exporter of weapons to importer

Not sure what will happen, but one thing I am sure, pitin has been a disaster for Russia

Color me skeptical about any “deal”

It’s up to Ukraine to make a deal. It’s their country.

Our diplomats can suggest in private.

Ukraine seems to be able to hold for an indefinite time its remaining part of Donbas except for the small city it is likely to lose.

Russia is gaining territory at a greater, but still small rate.

The lease idea is clever, but it should not have been officially offered up by the US government.
