Interesting. A similar demise for Earth beginning in about a billion years when our sun becomes about 10% hotter than it currently is. That’s enough to evaporate out oceans and make the Earth uninhabitable, but Mars could become habitable. Then after a few mo billion years the sun becomes a red giant. That’s when things get really heavy.

[snip] The matter-flinging star is a red dwarf -- a type of star far fainter, cooler, and smaller than the Sun. It is nothing like our own star: it has roughly half the mass, it rotates 20 times faster, and has a magnetic field 300 times more powerful. Most of the planets known to exist in the Milky Way orbit this kind of star. [/snip]

Thanks Red Badger. I'm thinking about this as a three-fer. Oh, why not?

Red Dwarf planet killing blast? Was it the chicken vindaloo? (Every time I watched that show they had a chicken vindaloo reference)

I’m no scientist, but...

Here on Earth a shock wave results when a force pushes air ahead of it. It dissipates over distance. In space, there is no air to push. So it must be the matter from the CMA, meeting no resistance on its way that is stripping the atmosphere from that blue planet. But wouldn’t the stream widen over distance, having the effect of dissipating the force?

I get a headache when I think on these things!

Should we allow this unprovoked violence go unpunished? I say we send a nuclear drone up there to show this type of behavior is unacceptable. Nuke it from orbit.

“But wouldn’t the stream widen over distance, having the effect of dissipating the force?”

Correct, but you have to remember that the ejected matter starts out as a humongously large mass travelling at a million miles an hour with no resistance in front of it................

Interesting article, but one tiny bit of info was left out- which Red Dwarf is it? It may be too small or far away for us amateurs to observe, but it still would be nice to know.

This is one of the reasons why chances of life in the universe other than on earth is far lower than most knuckleheads believe. About 80% of the universe is sterile because it’s being constantly bombarded by really nasty stuff from quasars, pulsars, neutron stars, black holes and whatnot.

Red Dwarf stars are the most common. Clearly anything like Earth would have a hard time evolving life. Perhaps something like Europa where the life is under miles of ice?
