Water has power. So much power, in fact, that pumping Earth’s groundwater can change the planet’s tilt and rotation. It can also impact sea-level rise and other consequences of climate change.
Pumping groundwater appears to have a greater consequence than ever previously thought. But now—thanks to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters—we can see that, in less than two decades, Earth has tilted 31.5 inches as a result of pumping groundwater. This equates to .24 inches of sea level rise.
“Earth’s rotational pole actually changes a lot,” Ki-Weon Seo, a geophysicist at Seoul National University and study lead, says in a statement. “Our study shows that among climate-related causes, the redistribution of groundwater actually has the largest impact on the drift of the rotational pole.”
With the Earth moving on a rotational pole, the distribution of water on the planet impacts distribution of mass. “Like adding a tiny bit of weight to a spinning top,” authors say, “the Earth spins a little differently as water is moved around.”
NASA research published in 2016 alerted us to the fact that the distribution of water can change the Earth’s rotation. This study in Geophysical Research Letters attempts to add some hard figures to that realization. “I’m very glad to find the unexplained cause of the rotation pole drift,” Seo says. “On the other hand, as a resident of Earth and a father, I’m concerned and surprised to see that pumping groundwater is another source of sea-level rise.”
The study included data from 1993 through 2010, and showed that the pumping of as much as 2,150 gigatons of groundwater has caused a change in the Earth’s tilt of roughly 31.5 inches. The pumping is largely for irrigation and human use, with the groundwater eventually relocating to the oceans.
In the study, researchers modeled observed changes in the drift of Earth’s rotational pole and the movement of water. Across varying scenarios, the only model that matched the drift was one that included 2,150 gigatons of groundwater distribution.

I will let you know soon about the paint job thing… Hubby’s truck just got painted. Haven’t gotten it back yet but I’m sure we’re all in trouble now…
I’m so sorry for contributing to the climate mess...hubby will be sanctioned
- IF that 31.5 inch change is accurate,-
They are saying they are accurate to 1/2 inch in the tilt of the earth. I don’t think that is possible.
throw away the living room couch and it will save weight that is retarding the earth’s rotation
and hubby will be happier, too

Root causes. People need water. Get rid of the people and problem solved?
Oh, that’s funny - before I got this far I tried to do a rough calculation and came out at just over 1/4” rise! So, at least the figure looks about right...
Anyway, the real concern is groundwater loss in places where it is so severe that humans depending on groundwater no longer can. We (USA) have such problems in some of our western states, and the Iranians have a flat out disaster happening. From a combination of overpopulation, almost unbelievable mismanagement and bad policy, endemic corruption, and a drought, they are in ungodly trouble.
Oh, Hank, just stop it.
Earth has been tilting or wobbling consistently for all time. The passages in the Holy Bible regarding islands becoming mountains or mountains becoming islands is not a line of BS.
😁
And while we are at it how about this jerk who keeps turning up the gravity?
When I set up my post Katrina apartment, as I have done for years, I use my compass and set the four points with small photos on the wall.
Then came that Japanese earthquake and tsunamis. That shifted my four points by an inch. It offset my Solstice sunrises, both summer and winter, by a viewable difference.
Now someone has measured that difference, and put it under a pseudo science about water.
Screwy.
I'm STILL waiting for my flying car! But, I guess this BS sells more copy to the gullible dopes these days. :(

WTF? (And other stronger questions.)
So, according to this study, “people” worldwide pump groundwater “uphill” a few dozen or hundred feet - because that's about as far as it is economically efficient to pump fresh water uphill out of a hole in the ground.
Then, that mass of water goes into irrigation ditches. And some goes into city and town drinking water supply pipes.
Then that mass of water goes into the irrigation pipes and spray nozzles and onto the ground. Some soaks into the ground, some evaporates, some is sucked up by plants and combined with CO2 from the air and converted into cellulose, branches, leaves, seeds, fruits and vegetables.
All of this is NOT “new mass”, and ALL of this mass remains on the earth - on the surface of the earth - where it was before.
So, why is the rotational center axis of the earth changed by pumping ground water from underground at Latitude 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 back to latitude 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42?
They are here. Just $190,000 and it's yours!
Can you loan me a few bucks? LOL!
