Traction Control became big in the late 1980's and early 1990's on luxury cars, but, it was used by Buick years ahead of time. GM introduced Airbags and also ABS Braking way back int the 1970's, but these safety options didn't gain popularity until the 1990's. Paul Burke was the Star of the 1960's TV shows, "Naked City" and "12 O'clock High" by Quinn Martin.

We had one.. 455 cubic inches. Pulled like a freight train… simply never stalled…there was always more.
Recently saw one at night. Couldn’t believe how far apart the headlights were. Looked like two motorcycles tandem in the lane. And the seat was like a sofa. Cool date car.
Beautiful - I’d like a jigsaw puzzle of that....
When did car manufacturers start calling them “hard top convertibles?”
Talk about pulling - my buddy had a ‘72 Cadillac Eldorado that he would use for pulling his 24’ tunnel-hull boat to Lake Powell from Lake Tahoe.
500CI, front wheel drive, huge inside with so much leg room due to no drive shaft. Plus a gigantic radiator - going up those long hills through the desert the temp gauge would barely move.
I miss those cars.
It was a beautiful car. I honestly believe that its Samon color probably made it worth more than it would be as any other color.
A friend of mine in high school, who I recent heard passed away, had a 1963 Buick Wildcat convertible, that had a 4 speed manual transmission, light gray body with black convertible top:
Either prior to that, or after that vehicle, he had a Jag xke convertible. Can't really rember, but I believe it was before. I think he bought it before he even got his liscense. I think reliability was the issue that made him get rid of it, possibly for the wildcat. Too many years ago to be certain anymore. 😁🤙
I would love to find a 2005 Buick LeSabre in mint condition. Best car we’ve ever owned.
That’s another beast. I had a friend with one of those too. And another with a Lincoln with a big displacement engine but I forget how many inches.
Those Buicks, from at least the late 50s were named Century, Centurion, etc., because they would easily do 100 mph. My bachelor Vo-Ag teacher had a yellow “Century”.
How do we go back to having cars like this ?
My Mom had a 1962 Buick LeSabre, I drove it in the mid 1960s when I obtained my drivers license and it was very comfortable and fast with that big engine (don’t remember exact displacement)!
“When did car manufacturers start calling them “hard top convertibles?”
The top retracts on a hard top convertible.
I googled. It goes back to the 1936 model!

Many in good condition, owned by little old lady’s that only drove them on Sundays to church, are listed for sale.
“There are 8 million stories in the Naked City..” I remember! With Harry Bellavwr as Sgt Arcaro. They used Pontiac Caralinas (1959+1964) through the entire series. I learned how to drive on my Dad’s 62 Catalina 🙃
Had a LeSabre (1995 version) after college. Wrecked it in the rain during a crisis when our church was collapsing and I was searching. Loved it. The 231 used 10W-30, not 5W-30 oil.
In an earlier life, I was a GM service tech from 1975 to 1982. I worked my way up from the Chevy dealerships to the Cadillacs. When I worked in the biggest Buick dealer in the area, many days I went home early. Buicks were the best cars GM had at the time.
A hardtop convertible has a hard convertible roof as opposed to a fabric or "soft" top. There were also some cars like the late-50s Ford Skyliner that had steel car roofs that would retract into the trunk automatically (if everything was working properly). Those are usually called "retractable hardtops", though.
My dad had a '57 Skyliner, the first car he ever bought new. Wish I had it now.
