I don’t get it. Referencing the fact that Islam permits 4 wives doesn’t seem sordid. In fact, it might be characterized as culturally sensitive.

'How many wives? One?' Trump asked, as Sharaa replied in the affirmative and laughed. 'With you guys, I never know!' The key to humor is that there has to be an element of truth.
And there is.

I wouldn’t say his remarks were sordid, but considering the time and place, in bad taste. But that’s President Trump, always rough around the edges. Nobody said we were voting for Emily Post or Miss Manners, but for a guy who gets the needed things done.

Sordid my arse. I loved it when the President spritzed some on Sharaa, and then another guy from his entourage.

I suspect this is not the first time Trump met or spoke to the President of Syria. He probably knows the Syrian leader has a pretty good sense of humor and is accustomed to spontaneous behavior from Americans.
I doubt if President Trump would greet Kim Jung Un of North Korea that way. It’s too easy to make someone like Kim lose face in front of his countrymen.

Doesn’t seem sordid though perhaps not well timed .

What is sordid is their treatment of females, not Trump’s comment, which was pretty matter-of-fact IMHO.
