The Left Is About to Take Power. The Stakes Could Not Be Higher.

Zohran Mamdani’s triumph has given socialists huge power in New York City. Now they must use it well—or see the ruling class crush them.

Zohran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York City has thrust the US democratic socialist movement into the national spotlight. If Mamdani’s triumphant affordability platform—which includes plans to provide universal childcare by increasing taxes on high-income earners—is implemented, it could lead to a significant transfer of wealth from the wealthy elite to the working class and provide a blueprint for socialist leaders across the country. Equally, if Mamdani’s mission is stymied, the forces banking on his failure will use it as a weapon to try and banish the left everywhere. In other words, the stakes of a Mamdani mayoralty could not be higher. That’s why it’s so crucial for the left and progressive movements to adopt a mass politics orientation during Mamdani’s tenure, the 2026 midterms, and beyond.

Mamdani’s rise is partly due to the corporate elite’s failure to defend working-class New Yorkers against the city’s cost-of-living crisis. It’s also because corporate Democrats lacked a strategy to counter Mamdani’s left-wing populist economic message, which resonated with many New Yorkers who came to see themselves as renters and working people struggling with affordability because of the billionaire class.

Now, the movement behind Mamdani’s election is poised to stand up against the chaos fueled by Donald Trump’s policies, particularly those that have exacerbated economic inequality. The same strategy and message that worked so well for Mamdani can be used to challenge corporate Democrats in the midterms, holding them accountable for their inaction on the cost-of-living crisis and their failure to build a diverse coalition against authoritarianism.

Win the Affordability Agenda

The Mamdani campaign transformed the New York City electorate, tapping into long-ignored Muslim and...

New York City — population of about 2 percent of the nation — is NOT the nation. The media wants to create a perception, as is so often their strategy. Nudging — Cass Sunstein. Manufacturing Consent — Noam Chomsky. Et cetera.

No reason to accept the premise.

I understand that under New York STATE law local/city income tax rates can NOT be raised without first getting state approval. I would be surprised if NYC gets that approval.

AI explains:

New York is so expensive due to a combination of limited housing supply meeting high demand, a booming and globally significant economy, and the high cost of land. The city’s dense population, restricted buildable land, and restrictive zoning laws mean that housing prices are extremely high, which drives up costs for everything else, from goods and services to transportation.

Key factors contributing to high costs

Limited supply and high demand: NYC, especially Manhattan, has a finite amount of physical space, but it is a major hub for jobs, culture, and tourism, attracting millions of people. This imbalance between high demand and limited supply drives up the cost of housing, the most significant factor.

Restrictive zoning and building regulations: These regulations prevent developers from building enough new housing to keep up with population growth, further tightening the supply.

High cost of land: Manhattan is filled to its edges, so new construction must go up, which is far more expensive than building out. The cost of this prime real estate is reflected in the price of every product and service sold in the city.

Strong economy: NYC is a global economic and financial center with a large and diverse job market, which fuels high demand for living and working there.

Dense population: The high population density means millions of people compete for limited resources like housing, dining, and services, causing prices to rise.

Israel may not allow Zorro to succeed.

It's not for Israel to "allow" or "not allow" what happens in America.

I'd like the NY State Legislature to block Mamdani. It can do do so.

But whether the legislature succeeds or fails -- foreign nations keep out!

Socialism has failed. It will always fail. The left will eff it up because they have failed and they also will always fail. It’s quite simple, which is why the left will never get it. MSN, shove it up your collective Obamaholes.

Good point about the fat cats getting their cut. With USAID shutting down the flow to NGOs and the rich fleeing NYC, maybe they won’t be able to bleed us dry any more. Maybe communism loses some allure if they cannot loot the public treasury.

The really wealthy are not going to just roll over and let them take their money. They have too many lawyers with too many tricks up their sleeves. The bulk of his programs will be funded by small business and young mid level office workers. They might get a rent controlled apartment, but how are they going to pay the rent when their jobs move out of the city or are taken over by AI? They will try to tax expats. They had staff dedicated to keeping track of when and how long Rush Limbaugh was in NYC, and Rush had staff making sure he didn’t get into trouble with them. This is going to be a real circus.

They make it sound like he got a huge mandate! He barely got 50% of the votes and only 39% of registered voters voted!

If Curtis hadn’t been an idiot and had dropped out this would have been a nail biter.

As others here have posited, I think there’s a good chance he’ll be on the dems Presidential ticket in ‘28 (I can see an AOC/Mamdani run...). In this way, the news about him will be concerning his aspirations to higher office, and not on the failures of his administration in New York City. The effects of his policies/actions will lag behind just long enough for his Presidential Run to become The News. It all might sound remote, and maybe it is, but I can imagine the leftists running a socialist ticket just to seem relevant, and possibly galvanize that wing of the party. Winning the election might not be their primary goal.

He’s Hitleresque but instead of using Jews as a scapegoat, he’s using the rich.

Wall Street needs to move out of NYC. Under 20 miles to Yonkers.

The proverbial, biting the hands that feed them.

The socialist brain is very defective. Socialists have never been able to see the consequences of their actions, even when there is plenty of history that contains those lessons.

“restrictive zoning laws”

I read in the past that NYC has zoning to accommodate 16 million people.

Here in Florida, commercially zoned land can be built three stories high with residential units, but I haven’t seen one built outside of downtown areas.

The young folks need to understand that housing needs a lot less labor to build than in the 1960s.

A nail can now be driven in with a pull of a trigger.

PVC pipe is easy to cut and easy to join together.
