Losing both grandmothers to MAiD in Canada 'wrecked' him

Benjamin Turland lost both of his grandmothers to Canada's legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide program, known as Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). While much has been shared about the devastating numbers of Canadians who are dying through the program, less has been shared about the lasting impact those deaths have on the family members left behind.

Key Takeaways:

* Benjamin Turland said that losing both his grandmothers to MAiD "wrecked" him, and caused lasting trauma.

* He explained the difference between watching a loved one die naturally and watching one choose death — and how it affects those left behind.

* Turland encouraged viewers to discourage their grandparents from choosing MAiD, because in his experience, losing someone to MAiD is more painful than losing them to natural death.

A new video from Dying to Meet You — "a project of cultural renewal to humanize our conversation on suffering, death, meaning, and hope... seek[ing] to value every human person," according to creator Amanda Achtman — sheds light on some of the lasting trauma that MAiD leaves in its wake. In an interview with Achtman, Benjamin Turland shared his heart-wrenching experience in losing both of his grandmothers to euthanasia in Canada.

Turland shared with Achtman that his first grandmother was very close to dying of natural causes, so he couldn't understand why she chose to go through with a MAID death. "It just wrecked me," he said.

Two months later, his second grandmother — whom he described as one of his closest confidantes and one of his closest friends — also chose to pursue euthanasia. On her sickbed, she thanked him for letting her "go through" with euthanasia, even though he said he didn't want her to do it. That left him with a strong guilt.

"Why didn't I say something?" he thought afterward. Zoom In:

Turland explained that seeing both of his grandmothers choose euthanasia prompted him to do some soul-searching.

"Did I not love you enough? Did I not love you the correct way?" he wondered. "Did I not make you feel like you're not a burden?... What did I do wrong that makes you want to end it now?"

Achtman noted that "It's always painful to lose the people we love," and asked Turland, "What difference does it make to lose someone to medical assistance in dying?"

"It's the choice of MAiD that hurts," Turland said, noting that when his grandfathers both passed, "it was the natural time for them to go. But when you choose it, you feel like then there's something I could have done, and it impacts multiple generations."

He advised everyone to discourage their grandparents from choosing MAiD now, before it's too late. He believes most grandchildren can have a bigger influence than they realize.

"You can't lose anything by telling them how much you love them and you want to be with them," he said.

The Bottom Line:

The rapid expansion of "assisted dying" in Canada and around the globe is championed as a win for people who want to control every aspect of their death.

But Turland's experience exposes a dark underside to so-called 'death with dignity' — the havoc it wreaks on the family left behind. This trauma is yet another indication that suicide is never the answer.

This guy sounds incredibly selfish.

On her sickbed, she thanked him for letting her "go through" with euthanasia....

He acknowledges that both of them were sick and close to dying, but doesn't appear to care if either of them were in pain, or what their quality of life was. It's all about how it made him feel.

God decides when it’s our time.

If they are in pain give them meds but don’t kill them.

Sometimes I wonder ...have we interfered with God’s time? Modern medicine and the ability to prolong life and/or suffering. Or to end it?

It really is the moral question. Just because man can, doesn’t always mean man should.

If they are in pain give them meds but don’t kill them.

And what if the meds make them incontinent, and they feel humiliated and out of it, or the pain breaks through the meds, or they simply don't like the way the meds make them feel?

This guy considered none of that. Not a shred of concern in that article about how either of his grandmothers felt, from their perspective. It was all about him, and his feelings.

My ex-wife's father was dying of metastisized lung cancer. He was in constant pain, and even sitting caused him enormous pain on his tailbone. He had hospice but the drugs weren't enough to stop all the pain, and he was sh*tting himself in his own home. His wife had been gone for years, and he'd lost his other daughter to cancer.

But, no option for assisted suicide.

So he ended up putting his rifle barrel under his chin and blowing his brains out. Did it in the backyard, even though walking there must have been agony for him, so he wouldn't mess up the house. Poor guy had no other options left.

He'd told his daughter not to come over that afternoon but she did anyway, so she had the misfortune of finding him.

So for people who are terminally ill, I have zero issue with it. Late stage hospice often ends up pumping them so full of drugs that they come close to being the cause of death anyway.

It’s evil.

I read that in 2023, 5% of all deaths in Canada were attributed to their MAiD. That is astounding. If this is true, then people are being pressured by the government and/or their heirs to kill themselves to save money. Canada should be ashamed.

As an abortion, euthanasia is progressive.
Some highly publicized horror story opens the door for legalization in “exceptional cases”.
Then those exceptions start snowballing and eventually, it explodes into massive problem.
“Grandma is too old, got some arthritis, we really need her money now, let us put her asleep!”
I do not think it will ends on 5%!
Maybe 50%?

You have to read a lot into the story that isn’t there in order to support your position.

What am I reading into the story that isn't there?

The guy clearly was focused solely on the effect upon himself, not upon whether it was the right choice for his sick grandmothers. Rather stunningly self-centered.

God was very clear when He commanded “Thou shalt not murder.” He made no exceptions for individuals allowing us to murder others.

God went even further : when you even think about murdering someone, you are guilty and need to repent.

Euthanasia is in fact murder.

It is VERY easy to guilt people into wanting to die, and people frequently do it to the weak, the sick, the depressed, the retarded, the imperfect, people they don’t like for petty reasons, etc.

No one is selfish for not wanting to murder someone or opposing murder.

The selfishness is on the part of those who:

A. Make the elderly, depressed, or unwanted feel like they are a burden.

B. Want to guilt people into helping them to commit suicide.

C. Are only concerned about themselves and not the damaging effect of their death on those remaining.

If you are depressed, there is medicine for that and people who can help you cope.
If you are in pain, there is medication for that too. God will take you out when He decides your purpose has been fulfilled, even if your purpose was only to enable someone else to love you or care for you.
