The case for standard time year-round
Senior Living ^ | 3/1/25 | John C. Schieszer

Switching permanently to either standard time or daylight saving time would disadvantage either early risers or night owls, according to experts. The current system provides each group with benefits for half the year. Now, the Coalition for Permanent Standard Time is calling for change. The group contends abolishing seasonal time changes and adopting permanent standard time, follows science and prioritizes public health, safety and efficiency.

A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) found that half (50%) of Americans support legislation to eliminate seasonal time changes, while only one-fourth (26%) are opposed. Currently, more than 60% of countries around the world follow standard time all year. Most of the United States shifts between standard time and daylight saving time each year. >[? “The switch to daylight saving time in the spring may seem harmless, but the reality is far more complicated," said Jay Pea, co-chair of the coalition and president of Save Standard Time. "It disrupts our body clocks, affects our sleep quality and increases risk of avoidable health and safety incidents, such as motor vehicle accidents, cardiovascular events, and even workplace errors in the days following the time change. Adopting permanent standard time, on the other hand, offers a better solution for year-round well-being.”

My husband absolutely hates ‘time change’. He wants ‘The Powers That Be’ to choose one and stay with it.

I love changing the time in Fall and Spring..

We agree not to discuss it.

I don’t give a corrupt Dorkbama which one is picked, but d*mmit, pick one. ‘Tis better for us and the dog to do what humans did for thousands of years - just adjust to the gradually shortening and lengthening of the days.

Other countries have on top of their infrastructure have very well lit, well maintained roads.

The time change extends all my outings because I avoid night-driving on freeways…esp unwell lit ones…in inclement weather. 🫤

I like it that way.

I like to have breakfast before I exercise, whether walking or the home gym.

But I would trade that bit of solitude for no change in the time.

I would stay on Standard Time.

Here’s an interesting thought...
We retirees can get up whenever we want, that’s how we live.

It’s the world that changes time around us.

Most crime occurs after the sun goes down. The longer you have daylight in the afternoon the lower your crime rate will be, especially juvenile crime.

Little crime occurs near dawn before the sun comes up, so that’s not a problem unless you’re in Memphis (the criminals don’t seem to go to sleep here).

That’s one of the reasons to have permanent DST.

Based on where I have lived in the Eastern Time Zone, I would like to see permanent Standard Time coupled with a change to Atlantic Time for everything from Pennsylvania east.

“I wake up 5:30 in the morning “

Looks like another late riser wasting an hour and a half of the day.

Daylight Savings Time was instituted during World War I to increase war time production when factories were lighted by sunlight through large windows. We do not need it any longer.

Other countries that* are on top of their infrastructure have well-lit, well-maintained roads. Sorry typo. (As opposed to the inevitable increase in accidents we have in states here once it gets dark earlier + bad winter weather!)

I want Standard Time year round, and Jay Pea is a very good source as to why it's better for us as opposed to DST.

As for me, this year I set all my clocks (except for my cell phone) to Standard Time. Yes, I'm older, but the affects of Long Covid and my insomnia makes changing the clocks intolerable. As long as I keep track of my appointments and ensure I account for the time difference, I'm fine.

All that said, Standard Time is better for everyone (except the golf lobby of course) and I hope and pray every day that DST is permanently eliminated.

I’m a night owl, but in all honesty, I just want them to pick one and leave me alone. I’ll adjust one more time and then never again.

The way it is now, it wreaks havoc on me for about a week, twice a year. Going off Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time is harder for me than the other way around, because I have seasonal affective disorder, but it would be nice to stop changing twice a year.

Just make a decision one way or the other, and stop the insanity.

No sir. I like my sunsets at 9:03 pm in the summer.

Is it too hard for you to turn your clocks, set your car and VCR?

What is the problem?

It never made sense.

It never reduced energy consumption in the net.

More political grand standing and pseudo science.

And of course those responsible have all moved on or retired.

But do those living in fear of the ozone hole, climate change, running out of potable water, drowning in trash, acid rain, deforestation... ever learn? Nope-

Starting in the 70s, environmentalism was hijacked by politics and greed. Very little of it today is real.

I'm with you, Dallas Biff. Standard Time year around is best. However, we could split the difference and set it halfway between Standard and Daylight savings. Then each faction would only have to give a half hour.

Latitude needs to be taken into consideration.

The Experts are full of ca-ca.

For one thing it is not "half the year" for standard time.

Pick a time and stick with it.

Thank you.

DST does not give you any more daylight.

You do realize that I hope?
