What we know

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane around 1 p.m. ET, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Category 5 storm is the most powerful of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and the hurricane center said it was "one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic basin."

Maximum sustained winds from Melissa are near 185 mph, according to the latest data from the hurricane center, with widespread damage expected to property and infrastructure.

At least seven hurricane-related deaths have been reported across the Caribbean so far, with three each in Jamaica and Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic.

The storm is expected to hit Cuba and bring severe weather to other parts of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

George Solis is reporting from Kingston, Jamaica, for NBC News.

Melissa is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record β€” and the strongest to ever hit Jamaica.

It is ranked first in terms of the strongest landfall with winds of 185 mph β€” tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

Melissa has the second-highest wind speed recorded for an Atlantic hurricane, with 185 mph β€” tied with four other hurricanes. Only Hurricane Allen of 1980 had stronger winds of 190 mph.

It has the third-lowest pressure recorded for an Atlantic hurricane at 892 mb β€” tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.

If only there were more windmills and solar farms. They could have been spared.

a decent destination fifty years ago

Dr. No (1962) Filming began at Palisadoes Airport in Kingston. Iconic scenes were shot at Laughing Waters Beach, where Ursula Andress famously emerges from the sea. Dunn's River Falls: was also featured in a scene where Bond climbs the waterfalls.

I feel sorry for Jamaica but am glad it’s not going to hit the United States.

Don’t be so sure about that. Hurricanes turn.

Not to worry: the isn’t a single computer model that brings Melissa within 240 miles of Florida. It is heading to the SE Bahamas and then close to Bermuda.

If Jamaica and Cuba get wiped out, we are going to see an influx of boat
people trying to get to Florida. Not to mention Jamaica begging us for money. Thank goodness Trump is President.
