What we know
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane around 1 p.m. ET, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The Category 5 storm is the most powerful of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and the hurricane center said it was "one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic basin."
Maximum sustained winds from Melissa are near 185 mph, according to the latest data from the hurricane center, with widespread damage expected to property and infrastructure.
At least seven hurricane-related deaths have been reported across the Caribbean so far, with three each in Jamaica and Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic.
The storm is expected to hit Cuba and bring severe weather to other parts of the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
George Solis is reporting from Kingston, Jamaica, for NBC News.
Melissa is one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record — and the strongest to ever hit Jamaica.
It is ranked first in terms of the strongest landfall with winds of 185 mph — tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019.
Melissa has the second-highest wind speed recorded for an Atlantic hurricane, with 185 mph — tied with four other hurricanes. Only Hurricane Allen of 1980 had stronger winds of 190 mph.
It has the third-lowest pressure recorded for an Atlantic hurricane at 892 mb — tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.
Jamaica can take it they have RUM
She look MAD!!!
AND Ganja..................
I wonder if this is the end of Jamaica. Gonna wipe that island clean.
Kingston will suffer, north shore will suffer more because of the buildings. Negril and Mobay, God only knows.
Blue Mountain Coffee too.
Never been there but I understand what was a decent destination fifty years ago is less desirable than the DR now.
Property Values will make it
“A Buyers” market.
I have many friends there and friends from Jamamca here. Good people please pray with me for them.
Mobay suffering... and now they are waiting for the backside. We have workers from all over JA here at the farm and are getting live updates.
Melissa came ashore further west than originally forecast... that will make things worse for Cuba downstream since (a) there’s less land to cross over, and (b) that land is lower in altitude (roughly up to 1000 ft. vs. double that had she been 20-30 miles further east).
Still gonna be very dangerous when it makes its second landfall late tonight.
They are set up fairly well there with entirely concrete houses (yes, the roof too), but we were kinda hoping it might wipe Haiti clean. I hope there are lots of pictures of Haiti from yesterday we can compare to the what they will blame on Melissa tomorrow.
I feel sorry for Jamaica but am glad it’s not going to hit the United States.
Newsom and his Mayor Karen Bass?
Keep those fingers crossed -- this thing keeps trying to Go West. It could end up dinging Florida if it keeps that act up.
I still see people walking around on this webcam.
