How many people receive SNAP benefits in the US every month?
USAFacts. ^ | Oct. 2025 | USAFacts.

About 41.7 million people during fiscal year (FY) 2024. That’s 12.3% of the US population. Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is determined based on household income levels....

The 12.3% of the population receiving SNAP benefits in FY 2023 is more than double the share in FY 2000 when 6.1% of people were recipients...

SNAP...is administered primarily by state governments...

In FY 2024, New Mexico had the highest share of its population receiving SNAP payments...

Qualifying for SNAP benefits is based on how close a household's income level is to the national poverty line. If expenses aren't considered (i.e., gross monthly income), households must make less than 30% above the federal poverty level. If expenses are considered, households must make less than the federal poverty level.

Isn’t there a program called WIC for the starving children?

WIC is a separate program, and people can receive both.

That “gift” is a tiny portion of the Military Payroll and was to cover any shortcoming.

Citizenship is required for voting in a Federal election...not required for anything else. My grandparents never became citizens.

Any taxpayer funded assistance in this manner should:

only be used for nutritious food

no fast food or prepared foods

no food from so called convenience stores

*****

With the ability to program inventories today this should not be a difficult thing to do. Especially with the benefits being issued via a "credit card" type medium.

I worked at a grocery store many moons ago and saw the abuse of the system.

I also saw some truly needy people. I well remember one single(?) mom with two kids. She'd picked up some items she thought were covered by WIC....but they weren't. I told her very quietly so as to not embarrass her. She looked about crushed when I told her.

Those are the folks who need our help.

How many SNAP recipients are working and being paid under the table so they can claim to be poorer than they actually are?

They do. What I should have added was while I was technically "poor" I never missed a meal.

I had two roommates.

I was working.

My folks helped covering about 50% of my college.

I had a car.

Yet I was technically "poor".

Family of four in Mass get $1000 a month in food stamps. A family of six gets $1500.

---- "I saw a video of one of the SNAP moms with bags of fat hanging off her upper arms while she shopped in a sleeveless shirt at a warehouse store. How did she get morbidly obese on the taxpayers many, many dimes? "

I think you've hit on the fundamental point.

When one considers our government and the sheer amount of lobbying that goes on behind the scenes, there has to be a Big Food just like Big Pharma, which wants poor choices by consumers to buy processed and heavily -- pun intended -- sweetened things.

If welfare "assistance" were limited to fresh fruits and vegetables and ZERO sodas and sugared things, the hue and cry from the lobbyists would still be loud and louder.

Socialism, as Kruschev stated back in the 60’s to Kennedy, “we will bury you”! Once the government giveth it never take away.

Add the free rent and other freebies and the gibbmedat are doing pretty well.
The illegal baby moms drive near new Escalades or Suburbans/Tahoes and shop with multiple baskets.
In all my life I have never used more than one shopping basket. Who can afford that?
Illegals and ghettopotumus’s on the government teat, thats who.

In te your friend it would help if snap benefits limited recipients to lower cost fruit, veg, canned goods, meat and dairy and fat.

Similar to WIC in that sense.
It would reduce a lot of the resentment.

In addressing how you get people out of poverty, Ben Franklin once said, “there has to be discomfort in poverty.”

In other words if you make being poor too comfortable, they won’t get off their asses and do something!

People should get a BOX of meat, bread, oatmeal, coffee, cheese and figure it out from there.

I would replace coffee with tea (don't need a coffee maker, and is cheaper), add rice, beans, cooking oil or spray, and powdered milk (for the oatmeal at least).

If expenses are considered, households must make less than the federal poverty level.

When I'm at the grocery - I do NOT do the delivery crap - I look at the belts and the clothes/shoes of those who use EBT cards.

It is RARE to see someone who is truly in need of EBT.

If this shutdown brings attention to the matter, it is long overdue.

Besides, this is a leftist/democrat originated problem; let them face it head-on. /s

White individuals receive the largest share of food stamps by number, accounting for about 37% of participants.

Embarrassing!

“Clinton Foundation”

Their mission is to make the Clintons filthy rich and cover all their expenses.
