We live in a depressed, crummy little one stoplight town, but no one around us has ever had deliveries stolen, thank the LORD! There is drug use here, and some minor crime, but it seems mostly confined to the small area around public housing. We did have a murder here several years ago, but it was not a random thing; it was domestic violence.
Why are so many of them overweight?
Decades ago I worked with a guy that came from NYC. Porch pirates existed way back then.
He got tired of it, crapped in a paper bag and put it out onto the porch. And it was stolen.
They have to consume mass quantities of calories for a quick getaway!.............
Interesting how in this day and age, there are pirate festivals, pirate guilds at Renaissance festivals, etc. celebrating the "Golden Age of Piracy" in the eighteenth century. Perhaps 300 years from now there will be re-enactors celebrating the "Golden Age of Street Gangs" of the 21st century who will dress up like MS-13, Tren de Aragua or Antifa thugs.
Reminds me of the old 1950’s era prank of putting dog poop in a paper bag and lighting it in fire, then ring the doorbell then run off.
The home owner comes to the door, sees the bag on fire then starts stomping on it!.................

Very interesting, indeed! Kids today even have pirate-themed birthday parties.
As was noted earlier, real pirates were filthy thieves and murderers. They were also often brutal, almost unimaginably brutal.
But they were also very colorful rebels in a time of servitude and slavery. That does have a certain attraction.
We saw something like that in “Hogan’s Heroes”. That show portrayed the Nazis as humorous, entertaining oafs. Which they most certainly were not.
I do remember that.
Also the town I grew up in still had outhouses in the 50’s. A trick was to move it back a few feet right after dark, so when someone had to make a midnight run they’d fall into the crap hole.
