A London woman was slapped with a hefty fine for pouring a splash of her coffee down a storm drain before hopping on a bus, according to reports.

Burcu Yesilyurt made the split-second choice to empty “just a tiny little bit” of coffee from a reusable cup of joe down the drain instead of risking spilling it on her bus to work in southwest London on Oct. 10, the BBC reported.

As soon as the drop of java dribbled out, Yesilyurt was immediately swarmed by three officers at the bus stop and slapped with a £150 (roughly $200) fine under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, which makes it illegal to dump waste in a way that could pollute land or water, including pouring liquids into street drains.

“As soon as I turned around, I noticed three men, enforcement officers, chasing me, and they stopped me immediately,” she told the outlet.

What if she used the drain as homeless people do? No problem?

I wonder if the constables are equally passionate about arresting Asian men who open urinate.

That’s what I was thinking. There is an oppressive demand to adhere to manners that undergirds some of Britain’s turn to authoritarianism. Demolition Man and Brazil come to mind.

It looks like the non-migrant Brits are trying to come up with a way to earn some spending money now that the miggies are running the government and getting all the revenue.

Not Monty Python.

More like a documentary on Nazi Germany.

London is a very, very old city. Some street drains lead to watercourses that go to the countryside. Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to deposit or dispose of waste in a way likely to pollute land or water. This can include pouring liquids into street drains that lead to watercourses.

The fine (£150) is the standard fixed penalty in that borough (with the possibility to reduce if paid quickly) for such an infringement

She’s a Turkish citizen and probably didn’t know the rules.

The fact the fine was withdrawn suggests even the authorities felt it may not have been the best use of enforcement resources.

Yesilyurt is a Turkish name. She should have told the cops that pouring coffee down a drain was part of an intricate Islamic ritual.

The cops would have immediately apologized and backed off.

🤔

This begs the question. Is dumping out a liquid beverage onto the street considered littering?

If so, guilty because I've never thought twice about it.

Me either, my rule of thumb has always been if it’s organic (apple cores, banana peels etc) and will break down, I don’t consider it littering.

And coffee certainly falls into that category IMO.
