Hunter Shoots, Kills Grizzly With Rifle In Self-Defense South Of Yellowstone

For the third year in a row, a hunter shot and killed a grizzly in self-defense in the Island Park, Idaho, area, south of Yellowstone National Park early Saturday.

The hunter, who Idaho Fish and Game didn’t identify, was cleared of any wrongdoing by the agency.

“After conducting a thorough investigation, it was determined that the hunter acted in self-defense as he was being charged by a bear from a close distance,” the agency stated.

Archery hunters shot and killed grizzlies in self-defense in the Island Park region on Sept. 1, 2024 and Sept. 1, 2023, according to reports.

Archery hunters are allowed to carry handguns for self-defense.

The hunter was hiking through thick timber in the North Antelope Flats area of Island Park, on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest when he encountered the male grizzly, Fish and Game reported.

The bear came out of some brush, charging directly at the hunter, who shot it with his hunting rifle, according to the agency.

The hunter was not injured in the attack.

I know Wyoming is a beautiful state, but I just don't think I could live in an area where a walk in the woods could result in a grizzly attack.

I was hiking in Yellowstone, turned a corner and was standing 20ft from a 1200lb bison.
We backed up really slowly!

The grizzly met a grizzly end because he needed killin’. And it sounds like it happened in Idaho. Island Park is a half mile or so wide and 20 miles or more long on both sides of the highway between Yellowstone and Sugar City.

I absolutely hate the idea of killing bears. Pople could and should carry Bear Spray with them in those areas.

I have been to Glacier and Yellowstone areas about 10 times.

I’ve encountered Griz 8 of those times, anywhere from 50 feet to 1/4 mile.

I now carry a .357 with Buffalo Bore Hardcast, and can hit what I’m aiming for at 25 yards 4 out of 6 times while under great stress.

I might make it ….

I was camping at Old Faithful in one of the cabins on the geyser field. I heard some noise outside my door. Cracked the door open. A bison was inches away. I didn't have time to weigh it :-). A woman in a cabin across the path from mine let out a scream. The spooked the bison and he departed from my doorstep.

How in the world did a grizzly get a rifle?

From the last hunter he attacked, obviously! ;-)

Dean Weingarten is Marktwain here on Free Republic. This is no secret. He is the preeminent authority on bear attacks and defense. I’ll let him come on over here and explain to you professionally why bear spray is a very poor substitute for firearms.

When my wife and I are in Griz country, she carries the spray, and I carry a firearm.

Firearms work better than spray. The people who live in Grizzly country know what’s what, so they carry guns. They might consider you to be a tree-hugger or something.
