MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- The 30-year-old mother of a baby girl found abandoned at Penn Station in Midtown earlier this week has been arrested.

Assa Diawara was located in Queens just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday and arrested by police.

She is facing charges of abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child. She expected to appear in court sometime Wednesday.

Police released a photo of her carrying the baby who was found at Penn Station on Monday.

An anonymous tip led police to the child at the station on W. 34th Street and 7th Avenue just before 9:30 a.m. The baby girl was found wrapped in a blanket at the bottom of a staircase leading to the 1/2/3 train platform.

Police say surveillance video shows Diawara outside Penn Station. They followed a trail of several videos and said they found another of Diawara taking a Cadillac car service back to Jamaica, Queens, which they tracked using technology. Back in her neighborhood, detectives canvassed the area where she was dropped off and a neighbor recognized her from the surveillance footage.

Detectives confronted Diawara and she allegedly admitted to abandoning her newborn daughter.

Aren’t there safe, places like hospitals, fire and police stations, churches where she could have done so?

Birth rate is down and she just dumps a baby after the terrible pains of child birth?
Plenty of couples are looking to adopt.

Assa Diawara? Immigration status? I think this one should be sent home.

1. There are no orphanages any more.
2. Nothing more than a “delayed abortion” where the baby was born alive.
3. An abortionist would get $300 to $500 to kill that baby whether born alive or not.

She should be chastised for leaving the infant alone, but then she should be thanked for at least leaving the baby alive.

My mom had eight children. Dad was military and it was financially very tough on them, besides being physically tough on mom. God blessed them with morals that allowed them to persevere, despite the odds.

In Massachusetts anyone can drop off a newborn at a firehouse or police station, no questions asked, though they will appeal to the mother to identify herself, they will not pursue her. It sure as hell beats the alternative of dumping the kid in a river or trash dumpster.

Yes, the Safe Haven Law which is known in some states by various names.

Allows the person “to leave a newborn with an emergency services provider without expressing an intent to return.” without arrest or questioning.

I’m thinking she’s Muslim and perhaps the baby would not have a nice life with whoever the father is. If he didn’t know she was pregnant and she wanted to hide it she might have been doing the kid a favor. Keeping an open mind…..
