Better hydration may lead to better sleep

Everyone knows staying hydrated is important, but new research highlights just how important it is for a less obviously related area of health—sleep.

In the hypohydrated state, participants slept about an hour longer than their baselines on average, but, they reported having a significantly harder time falling asleep and feeling more fatigued the next morning.

The study had 18 college-aged males report to the lab for four consecutive days. On the first day, they established a baseline hydration status. On the second day, they were euhydrated, meaning they were well-hydrated from having consumed 500 milliliters of water the evening prior. Participants were instructed to not drink anything after the lab visit on day two so that they arrived at the lab in a hypohydrated state on day three. Following that, they were told to drink and eat as they normally would, and the final measurements were taken on the fourth morning.

The researchers tested participants' urine specific gravity (the amount of solutes in urine—a lower solute concentration indicates better hydration), urine color, and body mass loss, which are all indicators of hydration status.

Participants completed a survey about the length and quality of their sleep each night, answering questions about things like how long it took them to fall asleep, if they woke up throughout the night, and if they dreamed.

By giving participants such specific instructions and controls, the researchers were able to establish a confident connection between hydration and sleep.

"These are levels of dehydration that we're seeing people walk around with," Lee says. "You may not know why all morning you feel a little fatigued, or you're having trouble sleeping at night, and some of it may have to do with your daily, habitual fluid consumption habits."

Drinking enough water before bed helps you sleep more efficiently, it seems. Otherwise you wake up fatigued, even if sleeping longer.

I know many will say this will make them wake up to pee, interrupting their sleep.

That is not news. Would be helpful to not pee so much at night. Maybe an osmosis catheter?

It also prevents cramping of muscles.

“18 college-aged males”

Not a lot of getting up to pee during the night with that group of test subjects. Now repeat for 60 to 80 year old men1

"Drinking enough water before bed helps you sleep more efficiently, it seems."

Obviously they never heard of old ladies having to pee every hour. Drinking more fluids before bed is the last thing we need to do.

I think that can be minimized by getting all your water about 5 hours before bedtime, or so.

Yea.
If yer over 50, you’re gonna have issues with this.
Maybe we could pull an Eric Cartman.
Wear a condom to bed, pee in it all night, then happily splatter it against the nearest wall when we wake up. Grateful for a full night’s sleep.
Mom will clean it up. No worries.

4 to 6 hours before our bladders say, “You’d better get up, or you’ll be waking up in a puddle. With a REALLY pissed off Wife next to you.”

Water, you mean like from the toilet?

True.
A doctor I had when I was 20 said to stop drinking long before bed to avoid getting up-—even back then. Got more important as I got much older. Swear off the water or have trouble getting back to sleep as millions of men do once they have to get up.

Like those statements about carrying water bottles during city and town walks or bicycle trips——but where are the public restrooms?

Going outside if someone saw him caused a friend of a guy at work to have a “sex offender” record because someone in the distance seeing him who turned him in to the police. That is a horror story.

Johns Hopkins Medicine website:
“...difficulty getting back to sleep after waking up at night, a condition known as sleep maintenance insomnia. While most people wake up during the night, a significant portion of the population struggles to fall back asleep. A 2010 study found that about 43% of those who woke up three or more times a week had trouble resuming sleep.”

An aside in a rock music writer’s book said he noticed at football and baseball games the lines for the women’s rest rooms were always short and the ones for men stretched out a long distance every time.

And the old man in the nursing home said to the Dr. “I have good news and bad news. Every morning at 7am sharp I make number 1,with a strong even flow. Every morning at exactly 8am I make a perfectly formed number Two.”

The doctor says “so what’s the bad news?”

“I don’t wake up until nine!”

Hey it was probably only a $10 million dollar Federal grant with $9.75 million going for "administration costs".

Best advice! That is exactly what I do. Usually do not need to pee until after 6AM. Drinking enough water during day minimized leg cramps in the morning. Another benefit of good hydration is better blood pressure readings. I focus on eating high water content fruits & veggies for hydration, such as cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupes, zucchini. I am 85.5 age and have zero medical issues. Did I mention aerobic walk for 25 minutes every day with 1 lb wrist weights? That is the best thing I do for myself.
