Steak, Butter and Ice Cream: MAHA Sets Up Fight Over Saturated Fat

Get ready for a fight over how much steak, butter and ice cream you should eat. 

These beloved foods—not to mention pizza, cookies and many sandwiches—all contain saturated fat. For decades, the federal government has told Americans to reduce their consumption of this type of fat, citing its link to heart disease.

The government’s advice may be changing soon.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in July that the government would issue “new dietary guidelines that are common sense that stress the need to eat saturated fats, dairy, good meat, fresh meat and vegetables.”

Kennedy last month released the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” strategy, which calls for bringing back to schools full-fat dairy products like whole milk. Kennedy told Fox News in August that he follows a carnivore diet of mainly meat, yogurt and fermented vegetables like kimchi. He has lauded food companies for using beef tallow.

Many scientists are alarmed, including members of a committee that advised the U.S. Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments on the latest update to the federal dietary guidelines. 

“The science is actually pretty clear. Exposure to unhealthy saturated fats, butter, full-fat dairy, fatty red meats, these things raise LDL cholesterol and contribute to heart disease,” said Cheryl A.M. Anderson, a professor at UC San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and member of the committee.

The current dietary guidelines, which are updated every five years, recommend people limit their saturated fat intake to less than 10% of daily calories. The American Heart Association goes further, suggesting saturated fats should make...

Not the carbs, not the calories, not the fat. It’s all the fake stuff they puy in iy. What you eat, not how much. Starving your body and working out to the point of exhssustion and pain, puts you in a constant state of stress, which leads to inflammation and metabolic disfunction. Your cells need lots of fuel. Don’t starve them.

I saw a doctor about a year after losing 50 pounds on keto. He told me it wasn’t a healthy diet and could kill me. I stared at him. His legs were spread so his belly could hang between them. I stared a little longer, then got up, said I guess we were done, and walked away. He didn’t say a word. Never went back.

I know that it’s not fat, it’s carbs that cause all the food related health issues.

THANK YOU for clarifying the issue.

I'm on the "Carnivore" diet and I do NOT eat anything but "Beef, Butter, Bacon & Eggs, Steak, Chicken, Fish.... NO CARBS.. NO SUGAR.. last readings from a recent blood and urine sample shows that BOTH my auto-immune condition of HASHIMOTO'S and my PRE-DIABETIC condition had both SELF CORRECTED once I stopped ingesting SUGAR and excessive CARBS. Also.. over that same 5 month period I LOST 55 Pounds.

68 years after graduating HS, I weigh within 8 pounds of what I weighed at graduation.

About time...I make my steak on the blackstone in bacon grease, put butter on the steak when on the plate and have ice cream for dessert.

I am 8 years 8 months into Stage 4 cancer. I eat butter off of the knife, steaks, burger, chicken, salad, eggs and fish. I cut my body fat, walk and ride my bike, and went from having several mets on my bones, shoulder and 6 ribs, to one on one rib. I used the medical knowledge and drugs, even chemo. I am an outlier. Am I lucky, or is my diet and exercise lengthening my life? I started out as 234 lbs. I am now 180lbs.

Carbs were my life, mac and cheese, potatoes and potato salad... are all gone. If I want a drink of milk, I drink heavy cream and eat non-sweetened yogurt or sour cream. I also eat breakfast at 11am o4 NOON, and dinner at 4-5pm.

The FDA guidelines are bunkum

My problem is losing weight. I’m kind of ‘’evaporating’’ and my doctor doesn’t understand why. neither do I.
