Illinois State University grad student flips out and says 'Jesus did it' as he topples Turning Point USA tables

A graduate student at Illinois State University has been arrested after he was caught on camera toppling a Turning Point USA table.

The vandal, who has been identified as 27-year-old Derek Lopez, was seen confronting student members of the conservative organization at the school as they were promoting YouTuber and comedian Alex Stein's October 20 event at the university.

'Well you know, Jesus did it, so you know I gotta do it right?' Lopez, wearing bright red pants and a red flannel with his hair up in a bun, could be seen telling one of the student activists.

He then walks over to the side of the table and pulls down the tablecloth, sending pins flying.

Apparently unsatisfied with his work, Lopez then grabs the side of the table and flips it over, sending pins, flyers and other items into the air.

'Thanks guys, have a great day,' he says waving at the students as he walks away.

When the students then try to reorganize their items, Lopez could be seen tearing a flyer off from a nearby bulletin board.

The students who were holding the event later got in contact with Illinois State University police, who subsequently arrested Lopez.

Nothing screams “LOSER!” louder that a 27 year-old “student” with a man bun.

Go to your local Democrat headquarters and disorganize their brochures and stuff then. I’m sure they’ll feel the same way.

That would be actual damage and on private property. Different thing.

Grad student Derek Lopez used Jesus’ actions as a justification for his table turn—totally ignorant of why Jesus did it.

The merchants and money changers provided a service for pilgrims who came to Jerusalem for the Passover and other festivals. Travelers who came from a distance could not bring their own sacrificial animals, so sellers provided them. Money changers converted foreign currency into the required temple currency for paying the temple tax (meant for the Roman goverment) and making offerings, as Roman coins were considered unsuitable for sacred use. However, this system became a source of corruption:

Many money changers and merchants cheated pilgrims with exorbitant fees and inflated prices for animals, taking advantage of people who traveled long distances to worship.

The business was conducted in the Court of the Gentiles, the only area of the temple where non-Jews could worship God. The noise, crowds, and commerce turned this space, intended as a “house of prayer for all nations,” into a chaotic marketplace, effectively blocking Gentiles from their place of worship.

Lopez justified his table turn because Turning Point USA upset his narrow minded political view. I bet his parents gave him everything he wanted after his temper tantrums and throwing his dinner bowl. I bet his parents were paying for his graduate degree.

Malicious mischief- misdemeanor - would you be ok with someone coming into your house and trashing it?

Nonsense. I’ll agree it is not a felony, but this is without question vandalism and interfering with others right to assemble and air their views. It deserves a fine, possibly some community service and if the university had any balls a suspension and warning that one more of these and he’s expelled.

It’s ok to disagree but this punk went beyond that and committed vandalism. That is not ok.

I actually agree with almost all of what you said. I just don't think what he did rises to the level of a ride in the police car to the booking desk and jail cell.

Hunt him down, talk to him, give him a citation and a summons, definitely.

If he doesn't show in court, put him on the 10 most wanted list at that point.

I just have a general problem with over-criminalization and a way too large legal community. Maybe because I'm fortunate to just not experience very much bad behavior.

I was shocked when I recently found out from a friend who's a judge that getting caught smoking in school earns you a court appearance.

And to another response above, yes, I'd be fine with cold-cocking him.

I’m with you. His actions cannot go without some repercussion be it a fine and or community service.

It’s a little like the broken window policing theory. If people are allowed to act towards others this way simply for disagreeing with a political or cultural idea, then it escalates as we saw with Charlie Kirk.

Also he should suffer suspension if a student or termination if employed by the school.

The Turning Point signs always have an issue’s side stated with the challenge “Prove Me Wrong.”

Childish tantrums don’t do that but DO illustrate the need for Turning Point and similar efforts. Man-Bun Boy’s actions only reinforced their argument.

As reprehensible as this is, I actually don’t believe it should be something you can be arrested for. No one was hurt, stuff was only disorganized.

There is also an implied low-level threat of physical violence involved here. Some 98-lb attendant at the tables would implicitly understand that it might be dangerous to attempt to prevent this act, and might accordingly be placed in a state of fear.

Regards,

I just checked since I was curious.

The perp knew exactly what he was doing and committed neither assault nor battery under Illinois law.

BTW, the headline is misleading, isn’t it, if the perp is employed by the university.
