Like many snowbirds, the massive shark Contender is gorging on fatty foods up north in preparation to go south to Florida for the winter.
The New York Post:
The biggest great white shark ever recorded in the Atlantic has resurfaced just off the coast of Canada – where he is plumping up on seals ahead of winter.
Contender, a 14-foot beast, was tagged in the North Atlantic by OCEARCH in January – a non-profit organization that conducts research on large marine animals – 45 miles off the Florida-Georgia coast, off Jacksonville.
His tracker only transmits a locating signal when the shark’s dorsal fin is briefly exposed above the water’s surface.
And last week it ‘pinged’ from the far northern reaches of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, right off the Labrador Peninsula in Canada – making him “one of the furthest northern pinging sharks that we’ve had” say researchers.
He could have been a contender…

“There once was a girl from Nantucket...”
Contender, a 14-foot beast
Common. Jaws, the mechanical shark monster was 25 feet...
That said 14 ft doesn’t sound that big....the one in Jaws was described 20 or 25 ft.
Too bad they cancelled the Summer Monster Shark tournament on Martha's Vineyard a decade ago. The "Boston fish shark contest" refers to the Monster Shark Tournament, which was held in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard until it moved to Newport, RI, in 2014. The tournament, sponsored by the Boston Big Game Fishing Club, involved catching large sharks and was sometimes controversial due to its scale and spectacle. History and controversy Origins: The tournament was a significant event on Martha's Vineyard, drawing large crowds and fish. Controversy: The event became controversial for some as it grew, with arguments arising over whether it was "sport" or a "spectacle". Local residents and visitors debated the impact of the tournament on the town.
The orcas will have his liver with a fine Chianti.
I think it is the largest White Shark ever seen in the Atlantic. The biggest one on record is a female known as Deep Blue, estimated to be over 20 feet long and weighing more than 2,000 kg (4,400 lb)
Thaaas a biiiig shark there.
Bruce was his name.
Biggest ever ??? Megalodon twice as big. In GW spieces females are bigger so there’s an even bigger “big momma” out there.
I know that the crew on Jaws nicknamed the mechanical shark Bruce, and the writers on Finding Nemo picked that up. But I’ve never read any account of where “Bruce” came from originally. Was it a nod to someone on the crew, maybe one of the guys who built it?
Orca will eat him for lunch...
It was named after Spielberg's lawyer, whose first name was Bruce. Professional courtesy, I guess.
14 feet may be the biggest ever great white caught of Canada, but it’s more or less the standard size of an adult great white. Some big females (much larger in males in most sharks) close to 20 feet have been seen off Mexico and California.
...off Canada..., not of Canada
Just the liver, with a side of fava beans and a fine Chianti
