Hegseth’s ultimatum to generals sparks fears of departures

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “my way or the highway” message to hundreds of generals and admirals at a summit in Virginia last week has sparked fears that some top leaders may choose to bow out of the U.S. military entirely.

The departure of two senior leaders last week stoked those worries, though the Pentagon says they were unrelated to Hegseth’s ultimatum.

“His speech directly attacked the values of many of the senior officers and enlisted members in the audience, and I would expect many of them to demonstrate their disgust by retiring,” Don Christensen, a retired Air Force colonel and former military lawyer who watched the speech, said of Hegseth.

The two senior military leaders to leave were Gen. Thomas Bussiere, the head of Air Force Global Strike Command, and Gen. Bryan Fenton, head of U.S. Special Operations Command based at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

Bussiere, who was appointed by President Trump, was previously nominated to serve as the Air Force’s vice chief of staff in August, but his nomination was pulled just weeks later.

In his retirement announcement, posted to Facebook on Tuesday, he cited “personal and family reasons” as the main driver for his departure, noting he had made the “difficult” decision after much reflection.

Fenton’s retirement came after three years in the role. “FWIW, Gen. Fenton was planning on retiring, it was not tied to SecWar’s speech,” Kristina Wong, an adviser to Hegseth, wrote last week on the social platform X.

The high-profile exits came just hours after Hegseth’s speech to hundreds of top admirals and generals in Quantico, Va., in which he outlined his vision of a military void of “woke garbage,” proposing less restrictive rules of engagement and fewer waivers that allow troops to have a beard. He also declared he would curtail...

More precisely:

Grok: “Approximately 653 active-duty flag rank officers serve in the US military as of 2025.”

The collection of those brass pin cushions was fat. There were so many fatties in there the only loyalty they held was to their membership to Golden Corral. The military will be just fine with few generals who aren’t focused on DEI.

Purge the general staff, without having to do it Stalin style.

I dont think anyone “ fears” the departure of a 4 star or Flag except the toads that were relying on his coat tails for their next promotion.

At the end of World War II, the United States military had one flag officer for every 6,000 troops; today, there is one flag officer for every 1,200 troops.

“fears of departures”

Hopes not fears.

Yes.

war people fight wars, pussies contemplate and wet their pants.

What percentage of the US Military has turned over since January 20, 2025?

And of the people who have joined since January 20, 2025, how many have completed their initial entry training, and job specific training, reported to active units, and gotten enough time under their belts to be very useful to their units?

I don't know the answers to those questions, but I do know that today, 7 OCT 2025, the US Military is still overwhelmingly the military force that Joe Biden left behind. It is being changed, but slowly.

And if you think (1) that China is not concerned that the change is to their detriment, and/or (2) that the harm done to our military since Slick Willy took office can be reversed with a bit of macho posturing, well, bless your heart.

A Flag Officer who does not want to be in command when TSHTF, should not be in command when TSHTF ... or at any other time.

Correct.

And are you confident that we don't have a lot of that sort of flag officer today?

It is being changed, but slowly.

The change is being expedited. A culture change has been required and it is being implemented. If you worry about China V. US, you need to rethink.

I'll assume this is based on your extensive military service.

To the contrary ... I’m confident that we DO have A LOT of that sort of flag officer today ... they’re the poisonous legacy of 0bama/Biden, and did not get flushed out during Trump45. Looks like Trump47 is making up for lost time.

At the moment, I see picking Hegseth for SECWAR as a brilliant move ... the right man for the time.

I'll assume this is based on your extensive military service.

And I'll assume you are the kind of "Our stuff is the best there is, and our tactics are the only ones that matter, 'cause we're the Uhmuricans!!!" lunkhead who had us send Brewster Buffaloes against Zeroes, water cooled M1917 machine guns against MG42s, Mark 14 torpedoes that did not work up against the Imperial Japanese Navy's long lance torpedoes, and equipped our forces in Korea with bazookas that could not penetrate the front of T34. Oh, yeah, and whose bean counter approach to war has not seen us win one, in the real sense of imposing our will on another nation, and not in the "look at how much of the other guy's stuff we blowed up" sense, since 1945.

Who knows. Maybe our low production numbers, incredibly expensive, wonderwaffe won't be taken out by $2,000 ChiCom drones dropping $45 explosive charges when they emerge from shipping containers. Maybe the ChiComs won't bring the country to a halt by taking down the internet.

Maybe. I hope so, if it comes to that. Be sure to post a message deriding my concerns when CINPAC COMPACFLT forces the ChiComs to sign a surrender on the deck of a US Aircraft Carrier anchored in Shanghai.
