Bear Gryll’s on his survival show ate a skunk once and said it was one of his worst mistakes. Apparently the stink permeates the meat. Made him nauseous. Said he would never do it again
Do you have possums? They clean my yard up regularly.
Foxes nearly wiped them out in my neighborhood. Not enough owls to do that where I am and there are plenty of mice and squirrels for the few owls we do have. Skunks are just starting to come back this year.
Skunk Ape
My landlord neighbor once shot and killed a skunk in his yard and had to leave the house because of the stench. I put the dead skunk at the bottom of an active compost pile I had going in my garden. Six weeks later, the carcass was garden soil. I couldn’t find any trace of it, not even bones.
RFKJ?
I’ve got 5 trail cameras out around my house. We catch deer, bear, bobcats, coyotes etc. I put out certain types of food quite often with trail cams pointing right at it. I’ll get a bird or something, see the food still there then another bird or animal and the foods gone. Happens all the time where you never see what took the food.
Skunk is still just food..maybe a turkey vulture. At least you caught a blur but that doesn’t mean what took the skunk was what you filmed.
El Chupacabra.
Speedy Gonzalez ???
Don’t know what picked up the skunk but on Saturday I saw a beaver that was pulling a dead beaver out of the road. I should’ve pulled over and took video.
Skunk fairy?
Great-horned Owl will take a skunk.
Owls seem the best bet - they do eat “roadkill”....
Maybe some illegal alien Haitians looking for some meat for their breakfast???
My son was on summer staff at a youth camp in upper Michigan a few years ago. They had a skunk invasion so they set out some live traps.
One day he sent us a video of a skunk in a trap as he was walking along the camp waterfront.
He was singing a song. “Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work we go”
SPLASH as the trap went off the dock.
I use trail cams, often with two of them watching the same area. I use two of them because they often do not trigger. For example, an elk will walk into the cam’s viewing area. One will trigger and give images, the other won’t. I’ve tried several major camera brands, they all miss taking pictures every now and then.
It was the owl. They are impervious to skunk smell.
Similar happened to me with the game camera thing. I would get pictures of deer in my yard at night all the time. But wanted some pics of the coyotes that are around. So I set up a game camera with a dead raccoon (that I caught in my chicken coop) wired to a tree in front of the camera.
I ran piano wire thru the hindquarters to the tree. The camera shot three shots. First two, raccoon was there. Third, no raccoon. Just gone. No predator showed up.
Now, I live trap the raccoons, possums, skunks, whatever. And take them downtown Cincinnati to the tent cities they set up.
If I still lived on Grosse Ile, I’d do the same thing and drop them off in downtown Detroit!
Here’s a tip for ya’ll. The best way to discard cooking oil is to leave your pan oil laden cookware outdoors overnight and let the raccoons have at it. They’d lick my pans squeaky clean.
