Florida politician Anthony Sabatini has called for a complete halt to the H-1B visa program, saying the government needs to review how it operates. In a tweet on Monday, he wrote, “I am calling for a complete and total shut down of h-1b visas until we can find out what is going on.”
Sabatini framed the move as a defence of American workers, amid growing concern among some conservatives that the program displaces US employees and affects wages. The H-1B visa program, which allows US companies to hire skilled foreign workers, currently includes an estimated 600,000–700,000 visa holders, with a majority from India (USCIS, 2019; Pew Research, 2023).

Well it's more than a "concern", it's people noticing the simply observable fact that the H-1B was specifically designed to do exactly that. It has been from the beginning, and it can't be "fixed", since it's doing exactly what it was intended to do all along.
The recent focus on its application isn't wrong, so much as it's not really germain to the real problem, but yeah, it's corrupt. It's been taken over by a bunch of interconnected "brokers" who game the system and direct the visas, along with a pile of graft to their buddies, but that's more of a problem for the visa applicants than the US workers. IE, does it really matter which well connected Brahmin with a fake degree from an Indian diploma mill takes an American's job? NONE of them should be here, and the only real solution is to end the program entirely.
That said, politics being the art of the possible, if the best we can get for now is making it so expensive that people stop hiring these phony "tech workers", well, OK, that's a start. We should take the W, but keep pressing for getting rid of the H-1Bs, and not stopping there. Yeet all of these corrupt work visas for ten years, and after a period of time, we can see how we're doing. And that's the moderate position.
Meanwhile China is doing just the opposite. They want to import more highly qualified “STEM” people.

The problem is the whole thing was a bait and switch. First it was immediate and $100k per visa per year. Then the next day it was effective in 3 years, does not apply to current holders and it’s a one time fee of $100k. It’s a big L. Keeps the current scam intact.
