I had cats my whole life and I am far from being a crazy leftist.

Same. I’m currently owned by two orange brothers and have had kitties most of my life.

There are no leftist thoughts running ‘round inside my cranium.

As a man, 78 years old and have had cats and dogs all my life I am crazy enough to still VOTE REPUBLICAN as I still remember the lies Lyndon Johnson said about not sending US troops to South Vietnam in 1964. He got elected on a No War platform, then sent troops to S. Vietnam. I was called up in 1966.

We lost one we’ve had for 10 years, back in July. I still haven’t gotten over it.

Don't try to replace the cat with an identical cat. My best cat was Tuxedo cat who could never be replaced. On the other hand, subsequent kitties have been better for the family.

We have three cats. The last is a small kitten who was four months old when she greeted my wife in the driveway, and demanded to be taken in. She appreciates her new life.

These cats have made our family and home life richer.

Dr your overall summary is good. an A.I. query reported that recent studies add complexity:

“ but it’s not the most recent evidence on its effects—particularly when it comes to emerging research on broader human impacts beyond pregnancy. Recent studies (from 2024–2025) continue to affirm the basics you mentioned while expanding on potential subtle, long-term effects in healthy adults, such as influences on behavior, cognition, and mental health.”.

And

“ Behavior and Personality: A 2024 Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology study suggests T. gondii induces “zombie-like” changes via microbial dysbiosis, increasing risk-taking or fear responses. A 2024 Indiana University study ties cysts to neurological shifts mimicking “spooky” behavioral alterations.
Cognition and Mental Health: Meta-analyses (2024 Parasite Immunology and 2025 Schizophrenia journal) link seropositivity to worse memory, slower processing speed, and higher odds of schizophrenia (OR ~1.5–2.0), bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. In schizophrenia patients, T. gondii-positive cases show elevated dopamine, more severe symptoms, and poorer treatment response (2024 Acta Tropica). A 2025 Folia Parasitologica review estimates it contributes to ~20% of cases in some populations.”

It adds these are not proven causations just new empirical findings to consider.

It is my understanding that those with compromised immune systems are more likely to get toxoplasmosis.

Years ago, I was astonished to read of the life cycle of the gondii parasite and its effect on animal behavior. Mercifully, as to indoor cats with regular vet care, the risk of human infection in the US is negligible.

Contrary to inclination, when our neighbor died suddenly a couple of years ago, my brother and I took pity on and fed, tamed, and took in his cat.

Once reduced to living fearfully under a boat in our backyard, the cat is now a winner of the feline life lottery. He is a happy indoor cat, vet certified as healthy, spoiled with premium wet food, affectionate, and well-mannered. We are careful about sanitation and cleanliness, of course.

This is probably another reason why everyone freaked out about possible widespread use of Ivermectin during COVID.

It may have gotten rid of everyone’s parasites and cured their leftism. That had to be prevented at all cost.

I have 2 cats and a dog. I’m pretty far right. I love cats and would have 10 if the husband would let me :)

Brilliant. Ivermectin is still a go-to in the veterinary world. We are fans, and also -- oh, gosh -- were not part of the "uptake" of mRNA stuff.

And I read RFK Jr's "Fauci" book. So glad he's a part of the Trump-Vance administration.

--- "It is my understanding that those with compromised immune systems are more likely to get toxoplasmosis."

Compromised immune systems is such a key to many alarms these days, and rightly so.

As to the thread:

"Prevention is by properly preparing and cooking food.[10] Pregnant women are also recommended not to clean cat litter boxes or, if they must, to wear gloves and wash their hands afterwards.[10] Treatment of otherwise healthy people is usually not needed.[5] During pregnancy, spiramycin or pyrimethamine/sulfadiazine and folinic acid may be used for treatment." Wiki

Toxoplasmosis

" 100,000 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis a year" is worldwide datum. Out of 8 billion people. Most who beome infected have no to mild symptoms at best. Healthy immune systems do their wondrous work.

But as to the news: Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Yeah? Really? Why , then, do all the neighbors’ dogs talk about your nighttime .......... “festivals” with little furry creatures?

Hmm?

The germ is expelled through feces which the cat gets on its claws in the litter box as it scratches the waste then carried to countertops, kitchen tables etc to be picked up on food and hands

I've had a succession of cats in my lifetime. I have never allowed any cat to jump on any food surface, counters or tables. With one exception, they all slept in their own baskets, as well, not on our bedding. All were lovingly cared for—our last one lived to age 23. Much as I enjoyed their antics and lap-sitting, I remained aware that they were animals, not "fur babies."

Just because they don't enjoy discipline doesn't mean they can't be trained. You have to understand what works for them. Namely, rewards: treats, stroking or brushing for good behavior, keeping their areas clean, giving them privacy and respect. My next-to-last kitty learned to understand 65 words or phrases over the years, and would obey reasonable commands. Her willingness to return to the house when called, sit beside the table when we said grace, articulate words like "out" and "nite", bump open the door with her head, and jump on or off my lap on command, etc. so amazed our neighbors that they sent flowers when she died.

Indeed they do! My daughter is going to come and take our remaining cat ( he’s hers anyway) and take him back to Kansas with her, At Christmas time. Her fiancé has a cat, and we’re thinking that Charlie could use the companionship, since Coco is gone. We know he misses her, too. I think it’s in his best interests to have a change of scenery. He misses my daughter, since she moved last November. She misses him as well. Maybe at some time in the future my wife and I will get another one. I will miss that lovable troublemaker.

Ditto for me, except for me it was only eight cats at once. We’ve had cats for decades.

I’m not a leftist, and I’m definitely not raging.
