Trump: Ties with Putin unfortunately meant nothing

US President Donald Trump admitted Tuesday that his past relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin failed to influence Russia's war in Ukraine. Speaking at a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during the 80th UN General Assembly, Trump said he once believed his personal connection with the Russian leader could ease tensions but "unfortunately, that relationship didn't mean anything."

He criticized Moscow for prolonging the conflict, noting that after more than three years of fighting, "thousands are being killed weekly with no progress." Trump also praised France's role in helping address other regional disputes, saying Macron’s support had been vital in reaching several settlements.

His remarks with Macron come after he wrote on Truth Social that Ukraine could regain all of its territory with EU and NATO backing, and after he stated that NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft violating allied airspace.

The Russia/Ukraine war is all smoke-and-mirrors, at the expense of the Ukrainian people. Many of the European slob nations still by $billions in Russian Natural Gas and oil. They are, along with China and India, directly funding Russia’s war.

Putin gave Trump good reason to anticipate Russia would negotiate in good faith. What is Trump to say when it becomes clear Putin is no longer so inclined?

Neville Chamberlain said the same thing about Hitler. Both Chamberlain and Trump have been proved wrong by history. The question is should they have know better? Having witnessed the aftermath of Chamberlain's folly, Trump should have known better. I write that as his supporter on most issues.

Trump put pressure on the side that was the greatest obstacle to peace. Initially that was Zelensky

Trump knew Zelensky was the one he had most leverage with, and he used it. He assumed giving Putin most, but not all of what he wanted would bring about compromise and a peace deal. Of course, Zelensky, after a brief "learning curve" did essentially everything Trump demanded of him.

Trump always knew Putin would be the biggest obstacle, but he thought by reeling in Zelensky, he could convince Putin to negotiate a peace deal. One more favorable to Russia than Ukraine, but not complete surrender. Now he knows both Putin and Zelensky better, and Zelensky is getting regular invitations to the White House.

cowboyusa: "HAVE FUN WITH YOU DUMB WAR EUROPE, WE ARE OUT!😃😃"

That's not what Trump said, by a long shot:

Bottom line: Pres. Trump will not send US troops to fight in Ukraine, but he will do everything short of that to encourage full Ukrainian victory over Mad-Vlad the Russkiy Mirovich.

Trump is not an ideologue. He is a doer. He has been willing to try making a peace deal with an autocrat, and smart enough to know that insulting Putin, like Biden did, would be counterproductive. It was worth a try. He gave Putin a chance, and Putin muffed it. Now Trump will move on to try something else, and it will not please Putin.

President trump will coordinate an end to Putin’s sales of Russian oil which will destroy his ability to fund Russia’s war with Ukraine.

No, Putin gave Trump a chance and everything he told him went in one ear and out the other. Trump at this point owns the Wars and the new one he wants with Venezuela.

Russia will continue, will totally destroy what its left of Ukraine forces and get exactly the terms he wanted from the very beginning. Meanwhile we wait for the next war to start with Iran which will probably spell the beginning of the end for Israel.

Note Egypt is pouring men and materials along the border just waiting for the right time.

“UN says”

The freeloaders at the UN are grifting gasbags. Go ahead and listen to them. They’re calling Israelis “genocidal” this week.

I would have exterminated the Palestinivermin down to their last pet rat.

Major offensive ground ops tend to be very costly, unless the party advancing has an overwhelming advantage of some sort: Weapons, manpower, surprise...

Even with the US ERAMS now being supplied to Ukraine, I don’t think the Ukies have that sort of advantage. The Ukies don’t have enough planes that can launch ERAMS to lay down withering pre-ground-offense hits with those, anyway. Certainly we’ve not sent them nearly enough HIMARS, artillery, etc., and the drone war along the front seems to be pretty much a stalemate.

HOWEVER, the trend line of the Ukies’ successful attacks on Russian refineries is emphatically positive, and there is nothing to indicate it won’t stay that way. It would not startle me if by November or so, the Ukies can be knocking out two refineries a day, each offline for a month or more, by taking out the distillation towers. If the Ukies get a little old US tech in a couple areas in which they are weak, that number could easily double. Tack on a major railway bridge each day, including those to Crimea, which already has extremely serious water supply problems.

THAT is the endgame. Without refined products, Russia will grind to a crawl, if not a halt. Crippled rail transport hinders any attempt to redistribute surviving supplies. Its own vast territory becomes a disadvantage...

Russia will try to respond, likely by increasing it’s already increased attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, but, at the survival level, the Ukies’ energy supplies are already considerably disbursed, and they’ve had 3 years practice in how to manage that survival and dispersal. I don’t think Russia can force a Ukie surrender anytime soon, unless Russia fully mobilizes, which would be very politically unpalatable for Putin, given that NATO hasn’t even responded forcefully to repeated serious incursions into NATO airspace. Alternately Russia “could” use numerous nukes (to which I’d say, blowing up the world is a spectacularly failed way to maintain the Security of Russia!) — “ain’t gonna happen”.

Putin’s best bet is to cut a deal before his distillation towers are all in ruins.

Both Chamberlain and Trump have been proved wrong by history.

Not sure history agrees with you.

Chamberlain's goal with Hitler was to buy time The weight of his government was not inclined to be involved once again with Germany in war. WWI virtually, if not literally, bankrupted England. Perhaps of greater concern in the late 1930's - England came very close to losing WWI.

Both Chamberlain and Trump have been proved wrong by history. Having witnessed the aftermath of Chamberlain's folly, Trump should have known better.

I think Trump has a sound working understanding of WWII history, particularly its causes. What is it Trump should have known better?

In what regard has Trump been proved wrong by history?

Let me also ask you again, what in your view would have been a proper response to the journalist's question?

Glad to read you are a Trump supporter; however, baseless public criticism is unhelpful.

I agree with your analysis. We think alike.

“Putin’s best bet is to cut a deal before his distillation towers are all in ruins.”

That is probably why President Trump laid out a red carpet for Putin to back out of the war - the writing was on the wall for the vulnerability of Russia’ oil industry (it’s Center of Gravity in the war). Backing out was the smart move, and Putin has been rational in the past. But Putin has lost it, and gone over the deep end - he is taking Russia down with him. It looks like President Trump’s offer of an off ramp has expired, and now it is hammering time.

“More Effed-16s!”

More weaponry is flowing to Ukraine - new stuff.

Lot’s of long range, precision strike systems.

Coincidence?
