Trump: Ties with Putin unfortunately meant nothing

US President Donald Trump admitted Tuesday that his past relationship with Russia President Vladimir Putin failed to influence Russia's war in Ukraine. Speaking at a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during the 80th UN General Assembly, Trump said he once believed his personal connection with the Russian leader could ease tensions but "unfortunately, that relationship didn't mean anything."

He criticized Moscow for prolonging the conflict, noting that after more than three years of fighting, "thousands are being killed weekly with no progress." Trump also praised France's role in helping address other regional disputes, saying Macron’s support had been vital in reaching several settlements.

His remarks with Macron come after he wrote on Truth Social that Ukraine could regain all of its territory with EU and NATO backing, and after he stated that NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft violating allied airspace.

President Trump’s statements today seem to signal a significant shift - a new phase in the war.

He said that Ukraine (with EU support) could liberate its occupied territory, and that it was time for Ukraine to act.

I expect that this includes approval for some significant Operation.

And of course, the unsaid part is....

zelensky is full of s**t, doesn’t really want peace, and can’t be trusted....

So let nato and ukraine fight against russia in their border dispute.....

and let nato find out how defenseless they really are, and how much nato really needs the U.S.

President Trump understands that Putin is feeling pressure from the gas lines and the pressure will grow with Putin’s tax hikes next week.

Trump’s relationship with a war criminal was always useless. He’s just admitting to learning that now.

Trump put pressure on the side that was the greatest obstacle to peace. Initially that was Zelensky, and Trump responded by marginalizing him. Eventually Zelensky realized that he needed the U.S. and was in no situation to dictate the terms of that relationship.

Once that happened, he began to work with Trump and follow his lead. But then that put the ball in Putin’s court and when that happened, Putin revealed that his talk of wanting peace was just that - talk. Trump gave Putin plenty of time to work on a compromise peace deal and Putin ended tapping him. So Putin is the one preventing a peace deal at the moment. Trump understands that and is responding accordingly.

At least Trump tried the peaceful way so no one should blame him of being a ‘warmonger’. He tried the peaceful way with Iran too at first. The world’s thugs reject Trump’s peace offerings at their own peril.

Trump’s “friendship” with Putin was always a euphemism meant for public consumption. It’s the same thing as when he talks about liking Xi and being friends with him. That’s the stronger partner in the relationship giving the weaker one a way to save face when he capitulates. Trump calls it “taking the lumps out”, and it’s smart diplomacy. No one should read anything more into it than that.

I don’t believe a word of that. Trump just has no conception of things even after Putin explained it to him.

That sounds like a rather obnoxious statement. You borrowed the journalist's word "admitted" when there is nothing in the article to support its use.

What leads you to conclude Trump did not realize he was negotiating with a war criminal? It certainly would not be the first time a U.S. president successfully negotiated a major deal with a leader of Russia. so there was nothing "useless" about the attempt.

Putin gave Trump good reason to anticipate Russia would negotiate in good faith. What is Trump to say when it becomes clear Putin is no longer so inclined?

It appears you would have us believe Trump is very naive.

Given the Ukraine invasion costs and sanctions, does Russia have the means to rebuild what is being destroyed in Ukraine and now in Russia by Uke drones?

Trump wants the Russo-Ukraine war to end. The fact that Putin refuses any negotiations or settlements, keeps fighting and wants more territory shows he wants to win. To Putin, that means outlasting Ukraine and taking the entire country.

The response of those who don't support Putin or Russia, but want Ukraine to lose, in response to Trump's statements about NATO defending its territory, about Putin playing Trump along, is to keep siding with Putin, that show's who side they are really on.

Eventually, U.S. conservatives, Republicans, True believing MAGA Trump loyalists, will have to pick between Trump or Putin, not both.

If they keep picking Putin over Trump... then what?

Putin’s opponents aren’t the President or the American people.

His adversaries are the WEF and the CIA. Until/unless POTUS demonstrates he can reign them in, the status will not change.

Because leaders come and go; the Military-Industrial Complex endures forever.
