Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch and longtime Never-Trumper, suggested that the Democrats could send the military to confiscate firearms from law-abiding Americans.
Goldberg framed his comments during a panel discussion on violent crime in major Democrat-run cities, comparing it to Donald Trump’s efforts to use federal resources to restore order in places like Chicago.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order last month, titled the “Protecting Chicago Initiative,” aimed at preventing the potential deployment of the National Guard by President Donald Trump to address the city’s rampant crime issues.
Johnson, a far-left Democrat, claims the order is necessary to defend residents’ constitutional rights amid fears of what he calls an “unconstitutional and illegal military occupation.”

If Goldberg cannot see the difference maybe he should look at history and ask himself, would Trump cracking down on crime lead to a 1776 moment... or would a future Democrat taking guns lead to 1776?
Does he think for a minute what would happen if some legal gun owner said no to a military force confiscating his guns? Bloodshed would be inevitable likely escalating to all out armed resistance.
Brilliant analysis by R.L. Dabney in 1871 (per your link). Applies today as much as ever:
This [Northern conservatism] is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn. American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader.
Segovia wrote: “NOW do you see why we were totally opposed to Trump using the US military to enforce the law in these shithole liberal cities? Because, as soon as the Dems wrest government power back THIS is what the hell you will have! Count on it.”
No, I don’t see it. You’re making one big assumption.
You’re assuming the NG would follow those orders.
The point you’re overlooking is this. The soldiers in the NG would be confiscating their privately owned weapons. I spent 14 years in the NG. Almost every NG soldier is a hunter. Most have multiple personally owned weapons. They would not confiscate their own weapons, their neighbors weapons, or the weapons of their fellow soldiers.
If the NG were given the order to confiscate personally owned weapons, they simply would not show up at the armory.
“... the Democrats could send the military to confiscate firearms from law-abiding Americans.”
It’d last about a week before the military/guard mutinied and “relieved” their officers of command.
Dabney was either a fool or a fraud. In a free, innovative, and growing society change is inevitable. The question is what kind of change we want. Societies that don’t change stagnate.
A talentless buffoon who would be nowhere without his mommy. He’s turned against everything his mother was for. He’s irrelevant.
When you have no other skill then scribbling you do and say what you have to to stay published!
We have a crazy non law abiding, violent rage filled people crisis. Solve that and reduce all the meds and dope and quit blaming an inanimate object for a crisis.
This title of this article is very misleading. I heard exactly what he said and the context in which he said it. He was not advocating for gun confiscation. Instead he was making the point that conservatives need to be careful about using the military as a domestic law enforcement tool and citing “crime emergencies” to send them into American cities. He correctly pointed out that some lunatic on the left in the position of a future President could make the argument that there is a “gun crime emergency” and they could use that to justify deploying the military to seize guns from retailers and perhaps private citizens also.
Truth! They use the criminals to control the people. Fear is their number one weapon. ‘We’ll keep you safe.” Suuure...
People deserve to live with dignity, not cower in their homes praying their four walls keep them safe.
JarJar Fatberg, Trixie’s spawn.
I just don’t understand what happened to Jonah.
You seem to think that no exceptions would be made for government agents. That might be logical, but Logic is in short supply when it comes to government actions. There may be some NG members who wouldn’t follow orders, but there would be plenty who would. Look at vichy France. The Vichy police carried out every Nazi command. Then look up Milice to see what ones fellow countrymen are capable of - I think they were the equivalent of the NG, but I’m no historian so I’m not claiming knowledge of their command structure
Dabney was Stonewall Jackson’s brigade chaplain during the Civil War. Jackson being a very relgious sort I imagine that their discussions would have been interesting.
Does sound like a “new guy” job to me.
Good news is I don’t think the average bull dyke in fatigues I see at the local airport from time to time is going to be a better shot then most of us here.
I’ve been telling Brits this same thing for two months.
BS is happening over their because their constables don’t fear kicking in a front door. A few of them taking an iron skillet to the face might begin to right the ship.
Solzhenitsyn had a bit to say along that line.
You might as well give up now and join the democrat party. Essentially, you’re saying Trump cannot take any action against any democrat shibboleth because sooner or later the democrats will use the same against us. IOW, you’ve as much as admitted defeat. Perhaps Vichy France is a good example for you.
